DR. SOLOMON GAON, Sep-
hardic Chief Rabbi of the
British Commonwealth, arrived
in New York for a three-
month visit to the United
States during which he will
address the 64th anniversary
national biennial convention
of the Union of Orthodox
Jewish Congregations of
America to be held Nov. 21-25
at the Sheraton-Park Hotel,

Mizrachi Leader Says
Zionism Without
Religion Is 'Feeble'

GREENFIELD PARK, N.Y.,
(JTA) — Rabbi Mordecai Kirsh-
blum, president of Mizrachi-
Hapoel V- izrachi, the Religious
Zionists t America, called -on
Orthodox synagogues and rabbis
this week "to become active
affiliates" of the religious Zion-
ist. mover • nt.
DeliveiL:g his presidential
address to 600 delegates at the
organization's annual convention
here, he said that "the very sur-
vival" of Zionism in the United
States was linked with a revital-
ized religious Zionist movement.
Without - the "deep religious
values" of traditional Judaism,
he asserted, "Zionism is a feeble,
inane and drifting - phenome-
non."
He added that philanthropy
and Hebrew, would not cement
"a more permanent link" be-
tween American and Israeli
Jews, and called for ties based
on Jewish spiritual values and
religious percepts.
The United States Govern-
ment was called upon to exert
pressure against Arab states to
cease their policies of discrimi-
nation against American service-
men of the Jewish faith at Arab
ports and military bases. -
In a resolution adopted at the
closing session of the annual
convention of the Mizrachi-
Hapoel Hamizrachi, the organiza-
tion also lauded President Ken-
nedy for his decision to sell de-
fensive missiles to Israel "to
sustain a modus vivendi in the
fiery Middle. East."
The 500 delegates attending
the conclave also urged the U.S.
Government to continue its pro-
gram of technical assistance to
Israel "to enable her to expand
her economy and to absorb the
influx of refugees from various
parts of the world." Another
resolution appealed to the Post-
master General of the United
States to ban all hate literature
from the mails.
