(Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) TORONTO—A Toronto Jew- ish community official reported Tuesday on his return from Havana that 1,000 observant Cuban Jews faced loss of kosher meat supplies because of the illness of the lone ritual slaughterer in Cuba and that they had appealed to the Israeli Chief Rabbinate for a shochet. B. Kayfetz, executive director of community relations for the Canadian Jewish Congress and Bnai Brith, said the present shochet who is 75 and was ill would not be able to continue slaughtering for much longer. He explained that the Cuban government has rationed meat supplies to three-fourths of a pound per person per week and that such rations cannot. be ac- cumulated. If the kosher meat and poultry is not available, the ration is lost for that week. He reported that there was complete religious freedom for the remaining 2,000 to 2,500 Jews in Cuba and that there had been no objections from the government concerning t h e - cabled appeal to the Israel Chief Rabbinate. He added that the 1,000 Cuban Jews were regis- tered with Havana's three MORTGAGES VA or FHA APPLICATIONS FOR ARE NOW BEING TAKEN On New or Existing Homes QUICK SERVICE Phone Us Today FRANKLIN MORTGAGE CORP. Students at University of Amsterdam Rapped for "Dachau Game" (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) AMSTERDAM — Students at the University of Amsterdam were publicly chastised in par- liament and by the University's administration Tuesday and were forbidden ever to engage again in the so-called "Dachau game." The "game" aroused many protests when one of the oldest campus societies "Nos Lungit Amicipia" (Friendship Binds Us) initiated a group of fresh- men last week by herding semi- naked students into an almost airless cellar where many of the initiates fainted. Thus the society contended the students would learn about life at the infamous Dachau concentration camp conducted by the Nazi regime. Many of the students protest- ed that members of their fam- ilies had been murdered by the Nazis at Dachau. Both the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Education told parliament .they would halt the "disgusting" game. The of- fendihg society announced it would suspend activities for a week of "contemplation." By orders of the Chancellor of the University, all students were told to attend the show- ing of a film showing "the real horrors at Dachau." having regard to the offenses for tism and, in other ways, to allay which they were inflicted."
