.1 THE DETROIT JEW ISH NEWS — Friday, November 2, 1962 w' Re-Elect Ben-Zvi to 3rd 5-Year Term as Israel President (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM — President Ben-Zvi, elected Tuesday to a third five-year term, was sworn into office in ceremonies on Wednesday. The 78-year-old Zionist vet- eran was the candidate of the parties making up the present coalition government. He re- ceived 62 votes from the 104 members of Israel's parliament who cast ballots. A total of 42 ballots from members of the opposition parties were blank as an indication of the convic- tion of those deputies that a president should not serve more than two terms. The blank ballots were the means by which the opposition deputies could express their opposition to a third term with- out voting against Ben-Zvi as an individual admired by all parties. The opposition did not offer a candidate for that reason. The vote will be in Israel's records as one of reelection of Ben-Zvi uncontested and unopposed. At the reopening of parlia- ment, three new members were sworn in to succeed others who died since the recess was begun. Mrs. Hannah Landman and Gideon Ben-Israel, of the Ma- pai party, are replacing the late Dr. Giora Josephthal and Herzl Berger. To succed to the vacancy left by the death of Hanah Rubin, of Mapam, the Knesset gave the seat to Yosef Kushnir. Ben-Zvi has received from Pope John XXIII a gift of a series of medallions, coined by the Vatican to commemorate the opening of the Ecumenical Council. They were given to Israel's Ambassador in Rome. Maurice Fischer, who headed the Israeli delegation at the Council's opening ceremonies. He sent the mementos to the President. • • Kfar Silver Looks to Detroit for Uninterrupted Assistance with Aid of Balfour Concert Funds Just as an Englishman need for 2,000 years the Diaspora not constantly tell himself "I Jew has had to remind himself, am an Englishman"—he accepts "I am a Jew." HARRY ABRAM Detroit Welcomes New York Presses Hunt for Killer of Hassidic Leader NEW YORK, (JTA) — New York City police installed a special telephone, advertising the number (EV 8-2304) widely, in a stepped-up effort to appre- hend the killers who, a week ago, beat to death Rabbi Ber- nard Eisdorfer, 55, a prominent disciple of the Satmar Rebbe. Police Lieutenant Alfred W. Dougherty, of the precinct em- bracing the Williamsburg sec- tion of Brooklyn where the Has- sidic scholar had been robbed and fatally injured, said the special telephone will be manned day and night, in the hope that some information might be received, possibly leading to the arrest of the hoodlums who killed Rabbi Eisdorfer. The death has raised protests, not only from about 10,000 Has- sidim in Williamsburg but also from all sections of New York City. The Brooklyn Jewish Com- munity Council, declaring it was speaking "as the voice of the organized Brooklyn Jewish com- munity," requested that the city take "swift action to put at rest the fears of citizens of the Wil- liamsburg Jewish community." The Council also asked that District Attorney Edward Silver probe the outrage. Ten thousand Jews who at- tended funeral services for the the late Rabbi Eisdorfer carried large banners blaming police and other city officials for fail- ing to give the residents of the deteriorated area sufficient pro- tection against hooligans.
