McNichols of Livernois UN 2-5611 By MORDECAI M. KAPLAN We Jews have much in our tradition that should qualify us to be expert in patience. We have paid dearly for our many false Messiahs, who came in answer to our impatience. As if to insure us to the long and severe testing of our pa- tience that awaited us, we were initiated in it at the very beginning of our career. When our ancestors left Egypt, we are told, God led them by a circuitous route, through the wilderness lest, when they encountered an enemy, they return to Egypt and its bondage. Thus they had their first lesson in endurance, without which they did not deserve to be free. The real testing came much later. It was then that our Sages repeatedly warned our people against yielding to the lure of wishful thinkirig, only to be bitterly disappointed when their premature hopes would come to naught. 15th Century Religious Peer More than 250 delegates and officers of Jewish Community Council-affiliated organizations attended the opening Delegate Assembly of the Council's 25th anniversary season held re- cently at Temple Israel. Explain Meaning of `Derashah' SPECIAL SALE Jews--Lesson in Patience The term "Derashah," as it is used today, refers to a "ser- mon." Sometimes any speech is referred to as a "Derashah." In ancient times, when peo- ple were perplexed, they "in- quired" of the Almighty to learn the meaning and the out- come of their problem. The ex- pression "Derashah," which means "to seek out," is used for this procedure. So was it that Rebecca inquired of the Al- mighty as to why there was such a struggle between the two children within her (Gen- esis 25:22). At times this inquiry was made through a prophet (I Kings 14:1-4). The book in which was recorded the in- quiries of the Kings to the Al- mighty through His prophets, and the answers to these in- quiries, were referred to by the name "Midrash" (II Chronicles 13:22). These books are men- tioned in the prophetic litera- ture of the Bible; but they have evidently been lost. When the activity of-prophecy came to an end, another form of seeking out the word of the Almighty came into being. This was the method by which the word of God was elicited - from the interpretation of a Biblical text. Instead of the word of the Almighty being "drawn" from the_ Almighty Himself through His prophet, it was now "drawn forth" from His written docu- mentary—the Holy Bible. The same term "Derashah" was used, since one has to "draw out" the idea by using one of the various methods of inter- preting the written word of the scripture. Thus the "Derashah," which originally referred to an inquiry of the ways of the Al- mighty through his written word and its official interpretation. The result was a "Derashah" and the people who did this were called "Darshanim," while the place where this study was made was called the "Bet Hamidrash."
