"LETTER BOX"

What Negro Maid
Thinks of Jews

The following appeared in the letter
column "Our Readers Write" in a
recent issue of the National Jewish
Monthly, published - by Bnai Brith. The
Monthly has consented to re-publica-
tion of the letter in the correspond-
ing column of The Jewish News.—Ed.

Editor, The NJM:
"I wish I could send a copy
of this letter to everyone who
is full of bigotry and hate for
the Jewish people. I also wish
I could include a copy of your
wonderful magazine.
"I am a Negro maid, employed
by the two greatest people in
my world. Through them I have
acquired a great understanding
of your people and I am a much
better person as a result. They
should be ambassadors of good
will for the Jewish people.
Amazingly, neither of them had
much contact with Negroes, but
they show an understanding that
I marvel at daily. They explain
their holidays to me and their
customs, and I really envy them
their deep-rooted traditions.
Their religion is such a proud
and true one that sometimes I
wish I had been born a Jew.
Don't get me wrong: I am proud
of being a Negro, but if my
people would only stick together
like yours, and have the com-
passion and love for one another
that yours has, we could make

much more progress.
"The Jewish people of Detroit
do much to help mine in the
field of segregation, which is a
very serious problem here in a
city that is supposed to be free
from it. I didn't know the Jews
were discriminated against just
like my people until I read
articles in your magazine, for
example about the Grosse Pointe
shameful practice of not allow-
ing Jewish people to live there.
"I idolize My employers and
their immediate families. So I
say "God bless them" and also
your magazine, and I am eagerly
awaiting the next issue. There
is a lot in it that I don't under-
stand, so I go to them and they
explain it to me gladly.—Ella
Halley, Detroit."
