Marguerite Koze nn Chajes Named
Artistic Director at Conservatory

Marguerite Kozenn Chajes was
appointed artistic director of the
Detroit Conservatory of Music
and will also head a master class
of International Lieders and
Operatic Music. .
The Detroit Conservatory of
Music, which was founded in
.1874, is one of the oldest music
schools in the middle-west. Its
president is Nora Conklin Skitch,
while Russel Skitch is executive
vice-president.
Before Mrs. Chajes came to De-
troit she was a primadonna with
leading opera houses. She was
graduated from the State Acade-
my of Music in Vienna, Austria,
and also studied at the Conserva-
tory in Milan, Italy, the Mozar-
teum in Salzburg and the Schola
Cantorum in Paris. During the
past 16 years she toured Europe
and the Middle East 18 times.
Three years ago she found-
ed the Pro Mozart Society of
Greater Detroit which is the
only American organization
connected with the Mozarteum.

Recently she was elected Honor-
ary President of the Albert
Schweitzer Study Center of Aus-
tria.
Mrs. Chajes is a member of
the Tuesday Musicale and is

Study Club of Detroit. She is a
past chairman of the Music De-
partment of the Hebrew Univer-
sity in Jerusalem and presently
chairman of the Music Depart-
ment of Bar-Ilan University.

The American Field Service
Club of Mumford is sponsoring
a jazz folk concert tonight en-
titled "Continental Swing." It
features local professional, semi-
professional and amateur tal-
ents. Some of the featured per-
formers are Dave Whitehorn,
folk guitarist and student at U.
of M.; Marc Chover, pick guitar-
ist; The Miller Boys Combo,
graduates of Mumford; Michael
Zachary of Mumford, presenting
dances from various nations;
the Dave Kaufman Quartet, and
Dawn Silver, Mumford's Ameri-
can Field Service student from
Johannesburg, South Africa, in
a modern dance. routine.
The profits from this show
will go to the scholarship fund
which helps bring American
Field Service students to Mum-
ford. Tickets can be purchased
at Mumford or from any mem-
ber of the A.F.S. Club.
The Columbia Scholastic
Press Association presented
awards to 35 Michigan schools
