Jews in Poland
BONN, (JTA)-The trial of a
45-year-old former police inspec-
tor, Wilhelm Doerig, in the war-
time murder of Polish Jews,
which opened before a jury
court here, will last at least
until the end of this month,
court officials said. Thirty-two
witnesses will be called.
Doerig, who has been under
arrest since May, 1961, was ac-
cused of the murder of more
than 700 Polish Jews, including
some children deemed insane
by the Nazis.
Twenty Israelis will come to
West Germany next month to
testify in the war crimes trial
of Oscar Waltke, a former Ges-
tapo officer who was in charge
of the Lvov ghetto during the
German occupation.
Watke specialized in uncover-
ing Jews with Gentile names
and papers. Few of his victims
survived his interrogation and
tortures. One eyewitness is the
Gentile wife of a Jew who was
abused by Waltke and saved
only because she gave the Ges-
tapo officer a large bribe.
Lebanon Hospital
Plans Expansion
MIAMI, (JTA) - The Metro-
politan Dade County Hospital
Advisory Board has endorsed
plans for completing the upper
three floors of the Cedars of
Lebanon Hospital which will add
174 beds to the institution which
was opened in November, 1961,
and has been operating at maxi-
mum capacity since then. The en-
dorsement carries the approval of
the Board of Commissioners of
Dade County.
Hospital officials said that
without the additional beds, the
hospital would not be able to
meet demands for facilities dur-
ing the rest of this year. The con-
struction includes plans to es-
tablish a cardiac treatment and
research center on the fourth
floor, to be named the Abe Aron-
ovitz Memorial Pavilion, in mem-
ory of the former Mayor of
Miami.
