U.S. 6th Fleet Bars Jewish Sailors from Shore Leave in Beirut
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The U.S. Sixth Fleet, operating in
Mediterranean waters, has published formal, written regulations
concerning the restriction. of JeWish personnel from shore liberty at
Beirut, Lebanon, but these orders are apparently not being consist-
ently enforced, it was learned here.
A Navy Department spokesman officially and categorically
denied both the existence and enforcement in any instance of such
orders. However, details obtained from reliable sources said that
copies of the regulations were aboard every ship of the Sixth Fleet,
although the orders were in fact only haphazardly applied.
One interpretation was that the orders were of an "advisory"
rather than "mandatory" nature, and subject to the discretion of
the captain of each ship.
On some ships, apparently, Jewish personnel may be refused
shore leave for "diplomatic reasons" because of the Arab-inspired
ban. On other vessels, the regulations are ignored; and Jews granted
the same shore privileges accorded to other men.
A question of application seems to hinge on whether the Jewish
personnel are "transient,"in which case most captains seemingly ig-
nore the regulations.

Reds Open Trial of 15 Jews
on Gold Speculation Charge
British Jewry Puzzled:
Who Finances Anti-Semites?
By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ
LONDON, England—In his annual sermon on
the second day of Sukkot in the Central Synagogue,
Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie expressed gratitude, in
behalf of his congregations, for the overwhelming
sense of revulsion that is evident throughout this
country over the Nazi-Fascist-anti-Semitic demon-
strations which were in evidence in recent weeks.
While this sense of gratification is generally
felt and expressed here, by non-Jews as well as
Jews, the admittedly handicapped position of dem-
ocratically-minded Britishers — in tackling issues
created by Colin Jordan—is akin to the position in
which AmericanS find themselves dealing with
Rbckwell and his ruffians.
It is the fact that in a liberal society civil rights
are granted to all, and there are no restrictions on
free speech. That is why the only legislation en-
visioned here, that may prove workable against the
advocates of violence by the demented bigots
against Jews, is a law to prevent public assemblies
advocating harm to any section of the population.
No one here really is seriously worried about
any real harm from the anti-Semites at this stage
of the game. If it were. not for the overwhelming
number of police who are always on hand in
Trafalgar Square to protect, the advocates of
terrorism, the Jordans and their ilk would have.
been so badly beaten up —physically—that they
would never show their faces again public.
But while there is no immediate or imminent
danger from anti-Semites, who are few in - numbers
in the organized fascist groups, there is a practical
matter that puzzles the anti-fascists. In order to be
able to continue their, series of anti-Semitic and
anti-democratic meetings, the groups, led by Jordan
and his cohorts, must be able to finance their
schemes. The question that is raised, therefore, is:
LONDON, (JTA)—Fiffeen Jews are now on trial in the city of Chernovitz—a city in
Bukovina annexed to Soviet Ukraine after World War II — charged with speculating in
gold and foreign currency, according to a report received here from Moscow.
The report quotes the Soviet Ukrainian newspaper Pravda Ukrainy as stating that the
trial started several days ago. The paper listed all the names of the accused, and emphasized
that many Jews in Chernovitz have relatives abroad. About 30 per cent of the 150,000 resi-
dents of the city are Jews.
The newspaper asserted that 55 pounds of gold ingots, diamonds, and foreign cur-
rency was found in possession of members of "the ring:" It revealed that amona the
accused was an 81-year-old man, Alter Bronstein, who was accused in currency b deal-
ings amounting to more than 8100,000. At the same time it described the aged Jew as
"an apparent beggar and scavenger."
Yefim Margoshes, described by the Soviet newspaper as a railroad inspector, was
charged. at the trial with having had contacts with speculators in Moscow, Lvov, Kiev, and
Brest, all cities with sizeable Jewish populations. The newspaper charged that Margoshes was
engaged in 170,000 rubles worth of buying and selling in a short time and added he was
holding seven savings bankbooks when he was arrested.
Another defendant, Moishe Meyer Zayats, described as "a round-shouldered lank man in
an old-fashioned blue suit," was charged with having "speculated in everything from women's
stockings to gold" and with having transacted operations totaling 130,000 rubles in the last
three years.
Other defendants listed by the newspaper were Hersh Shternberg, Srul Zimilevich,
Esther Weinbern, Isaak Ronis, Enzel Koffman, Samuil Levantal, Mendel Flomenboim,
Felika Mester, Hersh Nagel, Leonid Sherman and Yankel Kohen. The trial is the latest
in a series in which names of Jews have been prominently highlighted in Soviet press
reports of arrests, trials and executions.
(From Paris, it was reported that observers there considered the Ukraine trial another
in the series staged by Soviet authorities to draw public attention away from internal eco-
nomic difficulties. It was also reported in Paris that the new trial had affected progressive
non-Jewish circles in France who had believed that the reign of terror had abated in recent
weeks.)
where do the anti-Semites get their funds to carry
on their destructive activities?
Time and again the suspicion has been alluded
to that Nazism was so- well fortified with large
funds stolen from their victims that much of the
loot had been allocated for continued anti-Jewish
activities in the event of defeat.
Who has these funds? Where are their distrib-
utors for the evil purpose of perpetuating Nazism?
It has been established that in at least 20
countries there are anti-Semitic movements that
are linked internationally. It is a known fact that
Nazis are reviving their nefarious schemes in
Argentina. Rockwell and Jordan met in England
to unify the worldwide anti-Semitic organization.
is it Nazi money, most of it secured from Jews,
that is financing the anti-Semites in England, carry-
ing with it the threat of an international anti.
Semitic expansion that may soon hit American and
other Jewries? That's the question that puzzles
British Jewry—and there are many who believe
there is justified ground for entertaining fears.
The dream of a lifetime
came true when a 59-year-
old widow from the Soviet Union arrived in the United States to be reunited with
her 84-year-old mother after a separation of 34 years. For United Hias Service, the
worldwide migration agency, the family reunion climaxed a. migration assistance
service it initiated on behalf of the family almost three years ago. The HIAS-Council
Migration Service of Philadelphia worked closely with the agency on the case from
the very beginning. On landing at Idlewild, Mrs. Sonia Godkin, the newcomer (5th
right) , received a tearfully joyous welcome from her mother and her 86-year-old
stepfather, who are shown on either side of her. A number of her newfound relatives
made .up the welcome home party.
