1,700-Year-Old
Synagogue Unearthed
in Turkey by U.S. Team
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., (JTA) —
A synagogue dating back 1,700
years, containing numerous He-
brew and Greek inscriptions, has
been discovered by American
archaeologists in western Tur-
key, it was announced here by a
spokesman of a Harvard-Cornell
University expedition.
The synagogue was built be-
tween 220 and 250 C.E., accord-
ing to Professor Louis Robert,
director of the French Archae-
ological Institute in Istanbul. In-
scriptions inside the structure
state that it was renovated in
the early Byzantine era—during
the fourth or fifth century.
Located in • the West Turkish
town of Sardis, about 50 miles
east of Izmir, the synagogue's
decorations were said to "throw
considerable light" on the Sardis
Jewish community's social status
and organization at that time.
The archaeologists also un-
earthed a marble slab showing
a menorah, and a shofar, and two
marble platforms thought to have
been used for Bible reading. The
archaeologists are convinced that
the synagogue, 60 feet wide and
120 feet long, was the Sardis
Jewish community's main meet-
ing place.

Chicago Lawyers Study Cantors'
Rights to Perform. Marriages

CHICAGO, (JTA) — T h e
Decalogue Society of Lawyers
of Chicago said a committee
has been studying the facts in
the • controversy over the right
of cantors to perform valid
marriages in Illinois.
I. L. Karton, Society past
president and committee chair-
man, said the committee has
been hearing testimony from
both rabbis and cantors. He
said that after all information
has been obtained, the commit-
tee will decide on whether to
recommend that Illinois law be
amended to include cantors as
being entitled "to perform mar-
riages as part of the Jewish
tradition" or to make some

other recommendation.
The society agreed to em-
bark on the study after Judge
David A. Canel, ruling on a
request in Chicago Superior
Court for an annulment on
grounds that cantors could not
legally perform weddings in
Illinois, refused the annulment
and asked that a divorce be
sought instead.
Judge Canel refused the an-
nulment on grounds that "all
such marriages" in • Illinois
would be "put in jeopardy" but
he expressed a formal opinion
that evidence at the annulment
hearings indicated that cantors
"do not comply with Illinois
statutes as being able to per-
form wedding ceremonies."

Claims Parley Against Germany
Honors German Parliamentarians

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Two
important members of the Ger-
man Parliament at Bonn, Mar-
tin Hirsch and Dr. Alois Zim-
mer, were honored at a lunch-
eon at Hotel Delmonico by the
Conference on Jewish Material
Claims Against German y.
Hirsch is chairman of the In-
demnification. Committee of the
Bundestag, the lower house of
the German Parliament. Dr.
Zimmer-is a leading member of
the CDU, the dominant party
in the present government.
Jacob Blaustein, senior vice-
president of the organization,
who presided, laid stress on the
pressing need to enact basic
amendments and improvements
to the German Indemnification
Law, which the Claims Con-
ference had urged upon the
German Government. Early
enactment of the amendments
was essential, Mr. Blaustein
said, so as to repair injustices
which had arisen in the course
of administering the Law and
the nearly three million claims
filed under it, and to grant re-
dress to groups of Nazi victims
to whom compensation had
been denied for reasons lying

beyond their control.
Hirsch and Dr. Zimmer, who
have been visiting the United
States as members of a German
parliamentary study group, ex-
pressed their readiness to sup-
port every effort to speed up
legislative action and to correct
legislative injustices to. Nazi
victims in the United States
and with Claims Conference
spokesmen had impressed them
deeply with the strong moral
and human factors involved.
