Weizmann Scientists
Solve Tides Riddle

NEW YORK (JTA)—Scien-
fists at Israel's Weizmann In-
stitute of Science have cracked
a classic mathematical riddle
and are using the solution to
make detailed predictions of
the tides at every seaport in
the world as well as at points
beneath the oceans. This is said
to be the first time that world
tides have ever been calculated
from pure theory alone.
The study, which also has
bearing on theories of the cos-
mos, was reviewed in a report
of the Institute's scientific ac
tivities made public by Dewey
D. Stone, chairman of the Board
of Governors of the Weizmann
Institute of Science.
The basic theory of tides was
developed by a French mathe-
matician, Laplace, in 1775. But
as recently as four years ago,
the report said, Weizmann scien-
tists "also nearly succumbed to
the general feeling that this
task was impossible." T h e
breakthrough was scored by a
combination of new mathemati-
cal tools and electronic com-
puter techniques, the report
added.

Asst. Secretary of State Agrees
on Refugee Relocation with Arabs

WASHINGTON, (JTA)—The
Palestinian Arab refugees should
be told that they cannot expect
to return to their former homes
in Israel, Harlan Cleveland, As-
sistant Secretary of State for
International Organization Af-
fairs, agreed with Chairman Otto
Passman of the House Foreign
Operations Appropriations Sub-
comittee, it was revealed in tes-
timony made public this week.
Rep. Passman, Louisiana Dem-
ocrat, told Cleveland that the
Arab refugees should be taken
out of refugee camps and per-
manently relocated in Arab
states rather than dreaming of
a return to Israel. He said that
"for the United States to be cog-
nizant of that situation and not
be forthright, and just tell those
people that this is a proposition
that will never be solved is un-
believable.

During six years of work by
Israeli physicians among the
18,000 Bedouin of Israel, Dr.
Joannes J. Groen reported, a
high rate of gastrointestinal dis-
eases of childhood, pneumonia
and tuberculosis was found, but
there was a relative freedom
from coronary ailments.
A study among 520 male
Bedouin,. he said, found only
one abnormal. electrocardiogram
as compared to 18 among a
somewhat larger group of Jew-
ish dockworkers in Haifa. Only
three cases were reported in
the entire Bedouin population.
A typical U. S. population of
similar age composition over
the same period would prob-
ably have had about 150 cases,
Dr. Groen said. Dr. Groen
served here as visiting chief of
medicine at Mt. Zion Hospital.

SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA) —
The low level of coronary dis-
ease among the 'Bedouin in Is-
rael was ascribed here by the
chief of medicine at Hebrew
University in Jerusalem as pos-
sibly due to the fact that the
Bedouin diet is low in animal
fats and the Bedouin way of life
is characterized by an absence
of stress.

SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA) —
Federal and state agencies in-
vestigated the setting up of a
recorded telephone message
urging callers to read the Prot-
ocols of the Elders of Zion, the
repeatedly exposed anti-Semitic
hoax.
Stanley S. Jacobs, regional
director of the Anti-Defamation
League, said that the recorded
message was arranged by Fred
Huntley of Berkeley, Calif. He
said that he had received a
letter from Huntley a year ago
in which Huntley wrote that
"maybe Eichmann had the right
idea."
The stunt came to light when
advertisements began appear-
ing in Bay area newspapers,
urging readers to dial a Berke-
ley number to receive •a "pa-
triotic message." Those who did
heard a recording attacking
Communism and the ADL and
urging callers to read the vici-
ously anti-Semitic Protocols.
Sponsors called themselves
"Let Freedom Ring."
