Today we say,not only Happy New Year but Happy Birthday to the world. According to Jewish tradi- tion, the earth this new year will be 5723 years old. (If you think you are getting old, this should cheer you up.) The world is old enough to know better, but as we look about and see the nations in- volved in building bigger and bigger means of destruction, we can wonder if age really brings wisdom. However, it was not unfore- seen in the beginning. When God first proposed the creation of the earth and man, says the Agada, Peace and Truth stren- uously urged against it but Mercy and Kindness asked God to create the world. Some of the angels also were opposed to the creation of man. They were not without envy of man created like them in the Divine image and possessed even of an advantage over angels since man was endowed with reproductive power which the angels did not share. But God decided, said the rabbis, to go ahead and make man, since creation had been confined to heaven and earth and man would offer some- thing new, a fusion of both heaven and earth. Each of the letters of the alphabet pleaded that creation might begin with it. The letter Resh or R pointed out that Resh mean beginning, so it was most appropriate but God noted that it is also - found in the word, rasha, meaning wicked, so it was out. The letter Tsadik pointed out that it had the connotation of righteous and was therefore fit, but God noted that the word Zores, meaning troubles also begins with that letter. According to the rabbis, when she was fashioned, she was a pretty young woman of twenty, so Adam didn't have to wait for a date. And God looked upon the world and said, It is good. If there are still troubles, there is no reason to despair. Remember the first 5723 years are the hardest.
