The Book of Daniel had been
penned down in a . period of
complete darkness and hopeless-
ness. It sought to show how
Israel had been plagued by
powerful enemies—Babylonians,
M e d e s, Persians — but had
neither yielded nor lost hope.
The new, cruel persecutions of
the Syrians would be the last
trial which God would have in
store for His people. In God's
own time, this trial too would
end and all would be well
again. Even as Daniel had
passed unscathed through the
fires of the furnace, so would
all those who faithfully had
retained their Jewish faith.
Forty-three long and trouble-
some years Nebuchadnezzar had
sat upon the throne. When, in
561 BCE, he died, his son, Bel-
shazzar, took his father's place
as the head of the State; he
made great feasts to his lords
and ladies drinking wine and
carousing. At one of such feasts,
he tasted the various wines on
the table and found the vessels
unworthy. Insolently and sacri-
legiously, he ordered his slaves
to bring in the golden and silver
vessels of the Temple of Jeru-
salem, which his father had con-
fiscated. When the vessels were
brought in, Belshazzar, his lords
and consorts, used them for
heathen devotion praising the
pagan gods made of gold, of
silver, of bronze, of iron and of
stone.

"In the same hour came forth
fingers of a man's hand, and
wrote over against the candle-
sticks upon the plaster of the
wall of the king's palace; and
the king saw the palm of the
hand that wrote thus . . . The
king's countenance was changed
in him and his thoughts affright-
ed him . . ." (Daniel V:4-6).

In his panic, the king sum-
moned all the wise men of Baby-
lon asking them to interpret
the cryptic handwriting, but
they were unable to decipher it.
In this very moment, the
queen entered the banquet room
and when she heard what had
happened, she advised the trem-
bling king to send for Daniel,
who had interpreted success-
fully Nebuchadnezzar's dreams.
In a short while Daniel was
brought before the king, who of-
fered him royal gifts if he
could explain the mysterious
words on the wall. Proudly dis-
daining all gifts of gold and sil-
ver, Daniel unhesitatingly read
the Aramaic words as follows:
"God hath numbered thy king-
dom and brought it to an end.
Thou are weighed in the bal-
ances, and art found wanting.
Thy kingdom is divided and
given to the Medes and Per-
sians" (Daniel VI: 26-28).
"And Daniel was clothed in
purple and a gold chain was
put around his neck and he
was elevated to the third high-
est rank in the kingdom. In
that night, Belshazzar, the
Chaldean king, was slain"
(Daniel V:30).
6600 Mt. Elliott
Modern exegetes surmised that
the mystic message had been
transmitted in picture writing
which Daniel ingeniously com-
bined while the exposition of
the words as given in the Bible
is considered a secondary play
on their meaning.
The inscription has come to
be used all over the world as
a metaphor, as a symbol of
pronounced judgment; the
scene of Belshazzar's banquet
has served Rembrandt as an
inspiration for one of his great-
est masterpieces; Heinrich
Heine wrote a dramatic ballad
entitled: "Belshazzar's Feast"
and Lord Byron movingly de-
scribed the same events in
"Vision of Belshazzar."
