Holiday Good Wishes

Thanks to the incredible
achievements of Sandy Kou-
fax, left-handed pitcher for the
13231 Conant
Los Angeles Dodgers, and the
"TW 3-4393
high jumping of Valeri Brumel
of the Soviet Union, it may be
said that this past year has
seen some remarkable feats by

Jewish athletes.
There haven't been many
SWIRL
Jewish stars in sports, but those
HAIR FASH IONS who have been active have been
headliners and have provided

the sports-loving public with

re c o r d-breaking accomplish-
ments. What we have is quality,
not quantity.
New names, nevertheless,

have managed to crop up.
While Koufax has been

the other hand, a new pitcher,

Bo Belinsky, has earned—or
won, without earning—even
more space in the press than
Koufax.

Belinsky, in his first year in
the major leagues—with the

ginally off the field, to become

He is listed, for those fans who

about him, all during the 1962
season. It should be pointed out
that a single remarkable pitch-
ing chore doesn't make a man

Koufax, on the other hand,

became an authentic star in
1962, even though a freak in-
jury cut down on his record
and on his potential. Koufax,

who set a strikeout record in

It, too, has been One of those

with the interest in the game 3162 E. Jefferson LO 7-7626

emerge. So far, none hag. In
time, some of the good Jewish

Israel, where we sometimes

quiet this past year. True, there
was a professional boxing match
in Tel Aviv, of all places, with
the Jewish fighter, Alphonse

But obviously, Israel is not
for a Happy New Year
going to be a boxing center, and
the Israel tennis and track and

yet to develop into real threats.

But when a Sandy Koufax
comes to maturity, and a Valeri

against the New York Mets.
It was apparent that he had be-
come the most respected pitcher
in the game, a true star, when
a finger injury shelved him for
a very long stretch. Nonetheless,
he already has established him-
self as the best Jewish pitcher
in the annals of the national
sport.
Larry Sherry, his team-
mate, remains a relief pitcher
of excellence. As you know,
relief pitchers do not have
long careers. To many of
them are overworked when
they are effective and they
seldom have two good years
in a row. Sherry has been
the exception to this rule,
and inasmuch as he is still a
young man, he may become,
in time one of the finest
reliefers in the sport. Surely,
he was a most valuable cog in
a fine Dodger team. Simul-
taneously, his brother, Norm,
usually overshadowed by the
more spectacular y ou n g e r
brother, also has shown him-
self to be a major league
catcher. Seldom have there
been brother batteries, and
the Sherrys are the only Jew-
ish battery team in history.
As for the Russian, Valeri

by the absence of Jewish play-
