Abe Kasle receives JNF Tribute Award from William Hordes

The role of Israel in today's
world conflict of ideas, and its
stake in the preservation of
democracy, w a s described by
Neil S t a e b l e r, who was the
guest speaker at the annual
dinner meeting for members of
the Foundation of the Jewish
National Fund, Sept. 18, at
Rainbow Terrace.
About 130 people who have
made the JNF beneficiary of
insurance policies, of bequests,
or who have by such means pur-
chased forests, Nachlas, Miles
of Trees, or smaller projects,
making them eligible for mem-
bership in the Foundatio n,
heard Staebler give his impres-
sions of his recent tour of
Israel.
William Hordes, chairman of
the local Foundation committee,
and a past president of Jewish
National Fund, was chairman of
the dinner program.
Hordes and Morris J. Brand-
wine, president of the Detroit
JNF were hosts at the dinner.
Among the speaker s, who
lauded the work of land re-
clamation and afforestation car-
ried on by the Jewish National
Fund, was Sherwood Colburn,
Michigan Commissioner of In-
surance.
Colburn emphasized the im-
portance of the Foundation for
JNF, which helped provide for
future needs of the State of
Israel, and called for wider sup-
port through bequests and as-
signments of in s u r an c e. An
Israeli Bible was given to Col-
burn as a token of appreciation
for "his interest and dedication
to Jewish causes."
One of the highlights of the
evening was the presentation
by Hordes of a plaque to Abe
Kasle for "his devotion and
generosity to Israel by estab-
lishing a forest in the name
of the Kasle Family". Hordes
also announced that the JNF
will resume its annual dinners
on Wednesday, June 12, 1963,
and that Kasle will be the
guest of honor.
An agreement was consum-
mated and presented to Mrs.
Alex B e 1 k i n and son, Jack,
w h e r e b y they purchased two

groves of trees in memory of
their husband and father. who
passed away during the past
year.
Staebler, who is a leader in
the state Democratic party and
professor of political Economy
at t h e University of Massa-
chusetts, depicted the Jewish
National Fund as one of the
major factors through the re-
demption of 1 a n d, establish
ment of settlements along its
borders, and the planting of mil-
lions of trees, in the rebirth, de-
velopment, and future of se-
curity of the State of Israel.
In thanking Staebler, the
chairman also presented him
with an Israeli Bible.
A moment of silence was ob-
served for all those members
of the Foundation who died dur-
ing the last two years. Tributes
were paid to the memory of
Sam Alder, Meyer Freedman,
Rabbi Abraham M. Hershman,
Morris Lacjover, Rebecca Lipt-
zen, Fanny Perrin, Aaron Rosen-
berg, Morris Schaver, Nathan
Slobin, Daniel Temchin, David
Kobaker and Alex Belkin.
A report, giving figures of
what the Foundation has ac-
complished up to date, and what
is its potential, was submitted
by Rabbi Joshua Sperka, direc-
tor of the Detroit Foundation
committee.
Morris Brandwine conveyed
greetings in behalf of the JNF
Council. Rabbi Milton Arm gave
him the invocation, and Cantor
Simon Bermanis conducted the
Benshen after meal.

At the national convention of
Hadassah held in Pittsburgh last
week, Mrs. Nathan Perlman, na-
tional chairman of HMO, an-

This award, to be known as
the "Phyllis Shever Girard
Award" . was established in
honor of Mr. and Mrs. Schaver's
niece, Phyllis Shever Girard of
Gastonia, N.C., a past president
of the Hadassah chapter in that
city.
Commenting on this award,
Dr. Kalman J. Mann, director-
general of the Hadassah Medical
Center, stated that he was fully
in accord with a suggestion "that
the award should be used for
special grants to indigent stu-
dents to enable them to buy
those little extras—such as off-
duty clothes and books—which
better-placed girls get from their
families. The award could be
divided among three or four
girls at the discretion of the
school management, in accord-
ance with the need."

As we go forth from Thy sacred House,
Back to our homes and the ones we love,
Back to our tasks that the morrow brings,
Grant us forgiveness, 0 God of love.

Humbly we pray in the gathering dusk,
Bless us, 0 Lord, with a year of life,
Health and achievement and heart's content,
Hope and abundance and wise pursuits.

Peace and tranquility, send to our land,

Peace for all Israel and all mankind.
