U. S. to Give Israel Defense Missiles
For the first time, the United States will supply Israel with defensive missiles,
it was announced Wednesday.
This move was apparently made to offset the imbalance of heavy armaments
supplied to Egypt and other Arab states by Soviet bloc countries.
For many years, Israel has been pleading with Washington for military aid,
and the latest move fulfills a promise by the Kennedy administration to repair the
previous damage.
The State Department confirmed the new decision and it is reported that Egypt's
President Nasser has been informed of the U.S. decision.

WASHINGTON — An urgent
warning that the "time for
peace" may be running out in
the Near East was voiced on the
floor of the senate Wednesday
by Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New
York Republican.

State Dept. Denies Iteport
Kennedy Planned to Invite
Ben-Gurion, Nasser to U.S.
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — A
report in the Israeli press that
President Kennedy intends to
invite President Nasser of
Egypt and Pr i m e Minister
David Ben-Gurion of Israel,
separately, in official visits to
the United States was denied by
the State Department.
State Department spokesman
Lincoln White said he had
checked on the report and had
found that there was nothing
in it. Other Washington sources
similarly indicated that there
was no basis for this report.
They pointed out that if Nasser
were to come to the session of
the General Assembly of the
United Nations, he would prob-
ably be seen by President Ken-
nedy if he requested such an
audience. B u t all indications
point to the fact that no official
invitation would be extended to
him by the White House.
State Department spokesman
Lincoln White reiterated cate-
gorically that no arrangements
are in process for invitations to
either Prime Minister David
Ben-Gurion of Israel or Egyptian
.
President Gamal Abdul Nasser,
to visit Washington.
White said: "Although the De-
partment of State recognizes the
mutual advantages derived from
visits by chiefs of state or heads
of government, no arrangements
are in process for visits by either
President Nasser or Prime Min-
ister Ben-Gurion."
Republic, Sen. Javits criticized
the administration for its action
last year in voting against the 16-
nation resolutions in the United
Nations General Assembly call-
ing on Israel and the Arab states
to settle their differences by
direct negotiations.
"In the face of the present
danger of an arms race, I believe
the time has come for the admin-
istration to drop its negativism
on Near East policy and take the
intiative for peace which it has
repeatedly promised," Sen. Jav-
its declared.
Asserting that the U.S. Gov-
ernment had made no public
declaration of a positive policy
toward the Near East, the New
York Senator said the adminis-
tration has done nothing con-
structive about the blockade of
the Suez Canal against Israel
shipping or the Arab boycott of
Israel despite the fact that all
these countries are helped by
our foreign aid program."

JERUSALEM — President
Ben-Zvi extended "to all the
children of Israel wherever
they may be, my best wishes
for a happy New Year, a year
of redemption and salvation."
The President's greeting s
stressed "as the first and fore-
most commandment laid upon
us" the absorption of newcom-
ers. He noted that "the year
now ending was marked by a
large flow of immigrants," their
number "double that recorded
in the preceding year."
He called for cooperation of
all Jews in helping "our kin
coming to us from East and
West Europe, from Africa and
Asia and other lands, to be
integrated into our midst. We
must lavish upon them a true
fraternal love. We must give
their children elementary and
post elementary schooling. We
must instill in the parents them-
selves a knowledge of the
Hebrew tongue and the Jewish
consciousness."
He said that despite impres-
sive achievements during the
past Jewish year "the temnpo of
deVelopment fails to keep pace
with vital needs of immigration
and integration.
He warned that "our enemies
do not cease to attempt the
upsetting of our existence but
their contrivings were frus-
trated again as they have been
in the past. The people of
Israel rOorir in its historic
land shall . never ,more be dis-
lodged."
