A group of 140 members of the movement, which is dedi- cated to the task of applying Christian principles within the social, economic, political and cultural structure of contempo- rary society, heard presenta- tions by Rabbi Tanenbaum, Marshall Sklare, director, AJC's scientific research department, and Milton Himmelfarb, editor, American Jewish Yearbook. The group is in the U.S. pri- marily to study the workings of the Catholic laity. Vie Nou- velle is the French counterpart of the Christian Family move- ment in the U.S., which num- bers more than 50,000 couples in this country and aims to create a community conducive to to Christian living. Its pro- gram combines informal and practical discussions in regular meetings on family and commu- nity problems related to Chris- tian living and action by mem- bers to influence their parishes and communities. The move- ment has units in Canada, Eng- land, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Malta, India, Africa and many South American countries. During the three-day confer- ence, the scholars dealt with such topics as the sources and methods for Jewish geographical statistics, spiritual trends and the reconstruction of Jewish com- munal life.
