, Dean Mallinson of Western Mich. University Clarifies Position on Publishing of Offensive Brochure Dr. George G. Mallinson, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies of Western Michigan University, located in Kalama- zoo, in a statement issued to The Jewish News, clarifies his position on the anti - Semitic statements that were incorpo- rated in the pamphlet "A Sol- dier's Life—the Civil War Ex- perience of Ben C. Johnson," which was published by his de- partment. The brochure was criticized in the Purely Com- mentary column of The Jewish News on Sept. 7. In his statement, Dean Mallin- son declares: "Let me make clear at the very outset that these materials did bear the name of the School of Graduate Studies, Western Michigan University and I shall support one hundred per cent your privilege to react to these in any way you choose. Under no circumstances do I object to your editorial criticism. Un- less this privilege is accorded the newspaper, I am convinced that there is no need of putting anything in print. "I want to make it clear that I am not a historian, but rather a scientist. Consequently, my views of what may be suitable for publication may not be the same as those of historians. I want to place it to indicate as a matter of record that I did object to the inclusion of this item on the grounds that it HEADQUARTERS FOR ALL YOUR HOLIDAY NEEDS SPITZER DOES IT AGAIN ! Dr. Brown, the editor, disagreed and indi- cated that my attitude is not consistent with historical prin- ciples. I make this point, not to reject Dr. Brown's opinion, but rather to indicate that it is not the same as mine. I did write Dr. Brown on May 13 after editing the galley. Two paragraphs from my letter to him may be pertinent: In supplementing my editing and my penned com- ments on the galley, I want to state that I do not believe that the inclusion of such references adds anything to the publica- tion. I am equally convinced that their removal in no way affects the historical signifi- cance of the publication. " '2. I am equally convinced that the retention of unflatter- ing references is likely to draw criticism from ethnic groups to whom they will be distasteful. I do not believe that the prin- ciple involved in their retention is sufficiently meritorious to risk problems that might arise.' "I want to make clear, also, that my attitude was not one of expediency or hypocrisy, but one of honest belief that such statements are not representa- tive of the Jewish contribution to the Civil War and, from a contemporary viewpoint, were not desirable. Since I publish Faculty Contributions as a schol- arly item and do not edit such materials as I do edit those that appear in School Science and Mathematics, I have no real authority to reject material. After considerable debate, I was overruled. Again, I do not want to debate the merits of being overruled. I merely state these points as matters of fact. "The entry made in the pre- face, although bearing my name, is exactly what Dr. Brown sub- mitted. However, since it bears my name, I will take complete responsibility for it. "There is one point that I believe is inaccurate. The re- view in your editorial appears: `An Unflattering State-Financed Pamphlet . . .' This is not cor- rect. The document is not pub- lished with state funds. All the faculty contributions are sup- ported by a sustaining fund. The profits from sales of the publications are the only source of revenue. "Personally, I would like to apologize to you and to any other persons for any offensive elements of the document. -I assure you that it is not my desire, whether the School of Graduate Studies is directly or indirectly responsible, to have its name associated with diffi- culties such as these." Israel Reduces Interest Payment on Foreign Depositors JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Israeli Treasury announced a reduction of interest paid on de- posits held by foreign residents from five to four-and-a-half per cent. The rate, originally six per cent, has been gradually cut to the international level after the Treasury achieved its goal of encouraging foreign cur- . rency holdings in local banks. The reduction will apply to new deposits and to time de- posits when they are renewed. South African Police Chief Denies Existence of Nazis JOHANNESBURG, (JTA) — Major General J. M. Keevy, the acting chief of police here, de- clared that reports about the existence of a secret Nazi, anti- Semitic organization in South Africa were "unfounded." The press reported a week ago that such an organization in this country had been discovered and that the South African group, responsible for several anti-Jew- ish bombings, was linked with the anti-Semitic Tacuara move- ment of Argentina. "If such an organization did exist," said Keevy, "the police would, with- out a doubt, become aware of its establishment and would take the necessary steps." The Federation also announced that it will mark the centennial with a special dinner at which an award named for Julius Ro- seriwald will be presented. Guests of honor at the dinner, which will take place on Oct. 14, will be members of the Rosen- wald family, children and grand- children of Rosenwald. It -is ex-. pected that over 500 Chicagoans will attend the dinner, including officers, board members and sup- porters of the Jewish Federation and its 12 medical and social welfare agencies; the Jewish Welfare Fund; and descendants of men and women who served with Julius Rosenwald on the Jewish charities boards of direc- tors. For 25 years, Julius Rosenwald served on the board of directors of the Associated Jewish Chari- ties, now called the Jewish Fed- eration. For nine years he served as president. Rosenwald began his philanthropic endeavors in Chicago's Jewish community, but later his humanitarianism extend- ed far beyond his city and its Jewish community, reaching around the world and across re- ligious, national and racial bar- riers. He was born in Spring- field, Ill. in 1862 and died in Chicago in 1932.
