U.S. Jews Urged
to Provide $5 million
Scholarship in Israel

NEW YORK (JTA)—Joshua
Levy, treasurer of the Hista-
drut, Israel's Labor Federation,
urged American Jews to pro-
vide a scholarship of $5,000,000
to help assure secondary edu-
cation for Israeli youth.
He said such aid was particu-
larly needed for children from
Oriental countries most of
whom cannot afford the costs
of secondary and university ed-
ucation. Israel does not have
free high school facilities.
Speaking at a press luncheon,
the Histadrut official reported
that Histadrut has a member-
ship of 800,000 and expects
soon to reach the 1,000,000
mark. The Labor organization's
projected budget for 1963 is
250,000,000 pounds ($80,000,-
000), he reported. He also dis-
closed that Histadrut has under-
taken a program of seeking to
lower the costs of a trip to
Israel so that more people will
come as visitors.
