Several references were made to Jewish sanction of "thera- peutic abortion," one rabbi say- ing that his approval of such abortion was contingent on a group of physicians approving the operation. Jewish Military Chaplains Mark 100th Anniversary NEW YORK, (JTA) — The 100th anniversary of the com- missioning of the first Jewish chaplain in the American armed forces was celebrated here at the opening session of the bien- nial, two-day convention of the Association of Jewish Chaplains of the Armed Forces. The convention opened at the memorial chapel of the United States Merchant Marine Acade- iny, in suburban Great Neck. The Jewish chaplains marked the centennial of the appointment, on Sept. 18, 1862, of Rev. Jacob Frankel, of Philadelphia, follow- ing President Lincoln's signing of a bill passed by Congress, au- thorizing the appointment as an army chaplain of any "regularly ordained minister of some re- ligious denomination." Until that Act became law, 100 years ago, only regularly or- dained ministers of "some Chris- tian denomination" were eligible to the chaplaincy. A feature of the opening of the convention was the presen- tation of a Torah scroll to the Marine Academy's memorial chapel by Captain Joshua L. Goldberg, retired Navy chaplain. The Torah was accepted on be- half of the Academy by Rear Admiral Gordon McClintock, su- perintendent of the academy, and the school's chaplain, Rabbi Hirsch E. L. Freund. Chaplain Eugene J. Cohen, of Arverne, N.Y., was elected presi- dent of the Association of Jew- ish Chaplains of the Armed Forces at the close of the Asso- ciation's biennial national con- vention at Fort Hamilton. This is openly forbidden in the Bible (Deuteronomy 22:5). The commentaries group this prohibition with many prohibi- tions that prevent man from erasing the divisions made by nature in the universe. Obvious- ly nature, by Divine Providence, determined that there shall be a difference between the male and the female. When one sex dresses in the Clothes of the other, it is re- garded as a defiance of the laws of nature and the will of the Almighty. Some sources point to the fact that dressing the sexes in the garb of their oppo- site was a tactic used in some early primitive tribes in their magic rites. The Israelites were prohibited from copying these idolatrous practices. Bnai Moshe USY Installs Officers Lois Welber has been in- stalled as president of the Cong. (JTA) — Rabbis polled in Chicago were reported in agreement that Jewish re- ligions law sanctions abortion when the mother's life or mental well-being is at stake. The poll was taken by the Chicago Sentinel as an outgrowth of the controversy which de- veloped when an Arizona tele- vision personality. Sherri Fink- bine, sought a legal abortion after taking Thalidomide, a drug which was found to have caused many births of deformed infants in Europe. Refused a legal abor- tion in the United States, she went to Europe for the opera- tion. The Chicago rabbis said that the embryo is nothing more than "a limb of the mother," imtil it is fully developed and that limbs may be amputated, if necessary, without violation of Jewish law.
