THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, September 7, 1962 co Melee Ends London Fascists' Meeting; `Yellow Star' Holds Marathon Rally LONDON, (JTA) — British courts imposed sentences on more than 40 persons arrested in a wild melee that erupted when hostile listeners broke through strong police cordons to attack Sir Oswald Mosley and smash a meeting of his fascist Union Movement in the heavily Jewish East End sec- tion of London. Mosley had originally planned a march thrOugh that section, but was forced to cancel that activity when the London Police Commissioner, Sir John Simp- son, under mounting public pressure on British Home Sec- retary Henry Brooke, banned all political parades in the area during the weekend. A related clash occurred in nearby Dalston, where the anti-fascist Yellow Star move- ment held a marathon 12- hour rally to prevent another neo-Nazi group, the British National party, from holding a planned meeting there. But when several "nationalists" tried to hold a meeting a few blocks from the Yellow Star site, they were attacked and beaten, a number of them being hospitalized. One of the first to be sen- tenced was a man who had pre- viously been convicted three times for similar attacks on British neo-Nazis at public ral- lies. Sentenced. to 21 days, he said that, if fighting fascism meant breaking the law, he in- tended to go right on breaking it. Another defendant- said he had been awarded six medals during World War II for fight- ing Nazis. Most of the defend- ants received fines of. two to ten pounds ($5.60 to $28). Mosley was kicked and punched when the r oaring crowd of 3,000 broke up his meeting despite efforts by po- lice reinforcements eight deep seeking to protect him. He was Expect Fast Senate OK of Goldberg Appointment to U.S. Supreme Court WASHINGTON, ( JT A) — President Kennedy's nomination of Secretary of Labor Arthur Goldberg to succeed retiring Supreme Court Justice Frank- furter appeared certain to win quick Senate approval. Although the Goldberg nomi- nation would reinforce the "lib- eral" wing of the Court, praise for Mr. Kennedy's choice came from both Democrats and Re- publicans. Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen called Goldberg a man who "measures up to every standard required for a place on the Supreme Court." Many Democratic sen- ators lauded Goldberg's charac- ter, intelligence, and courage. Meanwhile, Justice Frankfur- ter's retirement has brought almost universal tribute to his stature and genius. It is being widely predicted here that Gold- berg will follow the path of Frankfurter in the Court to- ward conservatism and not nec- essarily emerge as a "radical." The Washington Star said edi- torially that "Mr. Goldberg, as a member of the Court, will turn out to be a conservative in the true and meaningful sense of the word. For the benefit of those who may doubt this, we recall the dismay with which so many received the word of Jus- tice Frankfurther's appointment back in 1939." * * * NEW YORK, (JTA) — New York newspapers were unani- mous in lauding President Ken- nedy's appointment of Arthur Goldberg to be a justice on the United States Supreme Court. The New York Times, which also paid tribute to retiring Justice Felix Frankfurter, de- clared that "the appointment of Arthur J. Goldberg brings to the Supreme Court a strong be- liever in the necessity for ex- panding Government activities to meet the complex require- ments of our industrial society. His record as Secretary of Labor has demonstrated the astonishing diversity of his tal- ents." The Herald-Tribune linked Justice Frankfurter's retirement with Goldberg's appointment, declaring that the appointee's legal experience is specialized if thorough. He will have much to learn but he ha, fortunately, a particularly illustrious model" in retiring Justice Frankfurter. The Journal-American said it was "confident that Mr. Gold- berg has all the qualifications, plus the dedication, to make him a worthy successor to Mr. Justice Frankfurter." The World Telegram and Sun referred to Goldberg's "lack of prior ex- perience on the bench" but add- ed that he was "a man of ob- viously superior intelligence and unquestioned integrity," and offered "our best wishes for a distinguished judicial career." The New York Times, in a profile on Goldberg, said his father, an immigrant from Rus- sia, worked as a peddler in Texas for a year-and-a-half be- fore moving on to Chicago. There he acquired a horse and wagon and started a small busi- ness carting fruits and vege- tables. The Chicago rabbi who married him and Dorothy Kur- gans is a guest at the Goldberg home whenever he comes to Washington. Goldberg was grad- uated, from Northwestern Uni- versity Law School at the top of his class. L.A. Federation Directors Draw Office Terms by Lot LOS ANGELES, (JTA) — Terms of office as members of the Jewish Federation-Council board of directors, ranging from one to three years, were drawn by lot at the August board meet- ing. The action was in keeping with the 1959 by-laws of the Jewish Federation-Council that after an initial three-year pe- riod of merged boards of direc- tors with no replacements, one- third of the board was to be replaced each succeeding year through equal representation among service agencies, consti- tuent member organizations of JF-C and contributors to the United Jewish Welfare Fund campaign. Implementation of the pro- cedure of electing one-third of the board each year is an effort to guarantee a continuation of experienced leadership for the organized Jewish community by the most democratic means. First election to fill 28 vacan- cies on the board will be held at the JF-C annual meeting in January, 1963. Plan Dedication of Maimonides Campus hit as he left his car for the platform to make a speech. His first words were drowned out in a storm of catcalls. At the suggestion of police, Mosley decided to halt the meeting. The crowd broke through, and Mosley scampered for his car, the target of a shower of rotten eggs. The incident was almost a repitition of a similar meet- ing a month ago, in another section of the East End, when he was knocked down and kicked. As a result of the riotous neo-Nazi meetings, the Home Secretary barred the use of London's Trafalgar Square to the ultar-right wing groups, and followed that up with the ban on political parades. The fascist leader declared after his meeting was broken up that he had publicly con- demned Hitler "and the kill- ing of the Jews in cold blood" and that he was not an anti- Semite. He contended that there was a "systematic" Com- munist campaign "to confuse us with the lunatic fringe like Jordan, whose ideas are com- pletely alien to us." The ref- erence was to Colin Jordan, leader of the British National Socialists who, with three other party officials, faces trial on charges of violating the British Public Order Act. Rev. William Sargent, found- er of the Yellow Star, reported before the Sunday meeting got underway that he and his wife had received threatening tele- phone calls, including one re- ferring to a blast Friday night at the Adath Yisroel synagogue. Rev. Sargent said the caller said "we dynamited the syna- gogue, and if you don't keep, your mouth shut, we'll dyna- mite you." Explosive experts were studying fragments of the home-made bomb which ex- ploded 40 minutes after some 100 worshipers had completed services and left. Damage was slight. The synagogue is about a mile from Ridley Road Dal- ston, where the Yellow Star movement held its marathon rally. BOSTON, (JTA)—Dedication 16.
