JWV Convention Acts Against Bias, Condemns Anti-Semitic Resurgence

Requests for legislation to
assist veterans, condemnation
of anti-Semitic manifestations
in several global areas, propos-
als that Rockwell should be
compelled to register as a
foreign agent and serious moves
in behalf of Israel included ac-
tions taken by the Jewish War
Veterans, at the convention
that concluded here on Sunday.
After the banquet session on
Saturday night, which was ad-
dressed by Sen. Engle of Cali-
fornia, the delegates sat through
an all-night session in an ef-
fort to conclude the business
of the meetings earlier due to
air flight cancellations that
day. Many delegates thereby
were enabled to make earlier
flights home than those that
were planned originally.
A major convention deci-

,

sion was the request that
Attorney General Robert
Kennedy should take. steps to
have American Nazi Party
leader George Lincoln Rock-
well register as a foreign
agent.

Weinstein said, "is shocking and
unfortunate, especially since
that magazine has always stood
for basic American concepts.
The editorial's tone of warning
or threat, I'm sure, cannot Cully
reflect the views of its editors.
I am hopeful that these editors
will, in a future issue, correct
the misapprehension generated
by their editorial.
"Sure, the editors of 'Amer-
ica' do not want Jewish groups
to stop asserting their beliefs in
basic principles for reasons of
`security' .or as a 'bargain pur-
chase.' Indeed, the whole tenor
of the word 'bargain' has an
intemperate sound. It is ironic
that in the 19th century it was
the Catholics who were in the
forefront of the battle for sep-
aration of church and state."

The delegates also urged
President Kennedy to demand
that. Argentina and Uruguay
take strong steps to curb out-
breaks of anti-Semitism in
those countries.

guay protect the more than
500,000 Jews living within their
borders against hard-core fascist
extremists. Because of the many
unreconstructed Nazis residing
in Argentina, the possibility of
a Nazi rebirth is not remote."
In an address to the conven-
tion last Friday, Gen. S. L. A.
Marshall states that. the U.S.
needs Israel as much as Israel
needs the aid of this country.
He justifies Israel's develop-
ment of rockets and pointed out
that Israel manufactured her
own whereas Naszer resorted
to foreign assistance.
George Romney addressed
the JWV delegates on Aug. 30
and received an ovation when
he endorsed the movement's
efforts to have Rockwell de-
clared a foreign agent. He
strongly condemned rightists'
attempts to undermine Amer-
ican unity.

Morton Landon of West
New York, N.J., was elected
national JWV commander.

In a telegram, the President
Daniel Heller was chosen
was urged "to take immediate judge advocate.

executive committee, the orga-
nization cited recent interna-
tional hate-mongering activities
in England. The message read.
"The announced formation
in Britain last month of an inter-
national f as c i s t movement
makes it imperative that these
lice be under perpetual surveil-
lance as an arm of an alien
philosophy. Those who remem-
ber Hitler and the genocide he
created are apprehensive that
this may be the opening shot
of similar episodes all over the
world as witnessed in Argen-
tina, Uruguay and other parts
of the world. Our delegates are
awaiting a reply."
"Our point of view," Madi-
son commented, "is that ex-
posure of these vermin will
awaken Americans to the dan-
ger of this new international
movement. We believe that to-
day organizations such as the
American Nazi Party, which in-
cites Americans to hatred and
distrust, are part and parcel of
the Communist -conspiracy and
should be exposed as such."

with the sessions of the men's

Mrs. John Nemon of 24808

elected patriotic instructor of
the JWV Ladies' Auxiliaries.

Lewis Weinstein, chairman

of the. National Community

told the convention delegates
that "no amount of threats,
whether intentional or unin-
tentional, should deter the
American Jewish community,
or any religious, racial or na-

its views and going to the
courts for the preservation of
