Mill's Essays in
Volume Edited b y
Miss Hirnmelfarb

Written more than a century
ago, the essays of John Stuart
Mill are as valuable today as
guides for students of political
and social sciences as they were
in his day.
Therefore, the new Doubleday
volume, Mill's "Essays on Poli-
tics and Culture," is a work
of immense significance.
Edited by Gertrude Himmel-
farb, the new Doubleday edition
contains Mill essays on religion
in a scientific age. mass cul-
ture, morals and expediency in
foreign policies. democracy in
America, theism. parliamentary
reform and other subjects.
Gertrude Himmelfarb, in her
introduction, describes Mill as
"the archetype of the liberal."
In her interesting analysis of
Mill's approaches to his themes
she declares that "he speaks
to us today with a special
cogency." It is this special ap-
plication that makes her work,
and her scholarly introduction,
of merit in our time.
Miss Himmelfarb, a graduate
of Brooklyn College, who re-
ceived her Ph.D. from the Uni-
versity of Chicago, is the
author of "Darwin and the Dar-
winian Revolution" and "Lord
Acton: "A Study in Conscience
and Power," and is the editor
of Acton's essays.
