No Protest to be Made Against
Israeli-Made German Uniforms
(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

JERUSALEM — Minister of
Commerce and Industry Pinhas
Sapir told the Knesset Tuesday
that he would not order an
Israeli firm making uniforms for
West German soldiers to can c el
its contract.
He made the statement in
plying, on behalf of the govern-
ment, to questions concerning
this issue. The clothing is being
manufactured in this country by
ATA, an Israeli textile firm.
Sapir declared he did not
think that "the supply of uni-
forms to the Bundesweter con-
stituted an affront to Jewish
workers." One of the parliamen-
tary questioners had asked the
Minister whether it was true
that ATA workers were being
subjected "to what amounts to
tyranny" when they were or-
dered by the company's manage-
ment to work on the German
uniform manufacture on threat of
dismissal. Sapir replied that the
ATA management had denied
such coercion.

orary critical shortage of con-

quarters of American aid,
$221.3 million in commodity
shipments, represented o n 1 y

He justified the Egyptian-
Soviet arms trade by saying
that there was no market in
the West for Egyptian cotton
"at reasonable prices" and that
"were the U.S. now to cease
aid, the U.A.R.'s ability to pur-
chase arms would not be sub-
stantially affected."
Sen. Keating said he was
"glad to have the reassurance,"
although he was not in full
accord with the department's
reasoning. He is the author of
a proviso, known as the Keat-
ing-Halpern Amendment, now
incorporated in foreign a i d
legislation, requiring that U.S.
aid "is not used directly or in-
directly to finance Soviet arms
purchases."
The Senator said it was "a
source of concern . . . to see
President Nasser deliberately
stepping up the arms race . .
He stressed that "direct nego-
tiations, not appeasement must
be our aim."
He said "I shall be following
this situation closely to insure
that the present language in
the foreign aid bill is enforced
and that our government does
not subsidize, directly or in-
directly, Arab militarism or
propaganda."

that year there were 30 traffic
deaths for each 100 million

more than 14 times as much as
our present automobile fatality
