Oran's Jewish
Population
Reduced to 100
PARIS (JTA)-The Algerian
city of Oran, which had a popu-
lation of 30,000 Jews, has less
than 100 Jews left now, all the
others having fled that city.
Jewish sources reported that
the Jewish families left in Oran
reportedly plan to stay on, un-
less the political situation there
deteriorates.
The Jewish refugees from
Oran are preparing to organize
the Algerian Jews now, in
France for the protection of
their right under French law.
They plan also to insist that
certain religious and cultural
needs be met.

claims of those who are 65
years and older would be paid
immediately up to 75 per cent,
to a maximum of 100,000 marks
($25,000).

Dies in Israel at 74

services were held here for
Mrs. Bessie Gotsfeld, a founder
of the Mizrachi Women's Or-
ganization of America and rep-
resentative of the movement in
Israel since
1933, who died
here July 20
at the age of
74.

Among the other institutions
she helped to create in Israel

sheba, the Mosad Aliyah Chil-
dren's Village at Petach Tik-
vah; the Bakka Settlement
Houses in Jerusalem, and the
Haifa Community Center, estab-
lished jointly with Canadian
Mizrachi Women.
6-Year-Old Jewish
Camper Found Dead
in Catskill Area
The body of six-year old Solo-
mon Schwartz, missing from
Camp Rav Tov in the Catskill
Mountains, since July 23, was
found in a cesspool Tuesday by
State Police who suspect death
may have been caused by
asphyxiation.
Several of the 12 service em-
ployes of the orthodox Jewish
camp have criminal record s,
according to Lt. Edgar Crosswell
of the Bureau of Criminal Inves-
tigation.
An autopsy indicated the boy
was alive before he got into the
cesspool.

Funeral services were held
Sunday morning at Hebrew Me-
morial Chapel on Joy Road.
Born in Russia, '79 years ago,
Mr. T a i c h, who resided at
16897 Santa Rosa, came to De-
troit in 1916. For a number of
years, before becoming organi-
zational director of the local
Histadrut, a post from which
he retired two years ago, he
was associated with the I. Shet-
zer Wholesale Furnishings firm.
He was a founder of the
Hebrew Benevolent Society
(Chesd shel Emes) and was ac-
tively associated with the Far-
band Labor Zionist Movement,
Bereznitzer Aid Society and
Sarner Relief Society.
A devoted Zionist all his life,
Mr. Taich took a deep Interest
in all pro-Israel activities, in-
cluding the Jewish National
Fund and other Zionist causes.
The Taichs celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary seven
years ago.
Rabbi Lissman Dead;
Was N. Y. Fire Dept.
Senior Chaplain
NEW YORK, (JTA) - Rabbi
Edward Lissman, senior chaplain
of the New York City Fire De-
partment and founder and for-
mer spiritual leader of the River-
side Synagogue, died here July
29 at the age of 92.
He was also chaplain-in-chief
of the Jewish War Veterans of
the United States since the First
World War, and was chaplain of
the Jewish Postal Welfare Work-
ers.
Born in Sheffield, England,
Rabbi Lissman came to the
United States in 1889 and served
in his first rabbinical position at
Temple B'nai Sholem in Brook-
lyn. In 1904 he founded the
Hebrew Tabernacle in Harlem,
and served as its spiritual leader
until 1922, when he founded the
Riverside Synagogue. He was a
member of the Central Confer-
ence of American Rabbis. He
has been a chaplain in the Fire
Department since 1930.
Gertrude Hoffman Dies
Mrs. Gertrude A. Hoffman,
member of Cong. Beth Sholom
and the Ladies' Auxiliary of
Yetz-Cohen Post, Jewish War
Veterans, died Monday at the
age of 47. She is survived by
her husband, Harry; son, Alan;
two daughters, Janice and
Linda; mother, Mrs. Rose
Schnitzer; two brothers and
three sisters.
Services were held at the
Kaufman Funeral Home.
