STRATFORD, Ontario — The
Shakespearean Festival rose to
its greatest heights here with the
new triumph scored Monday by
the performers in "Cyrano de
Bergerac."
Matching all previous opening
nights in glamor, the premier
of "Cyrano" in the present sea-
son again drew a record crowd
and has earned acclaim as one
of the glamorous events in a most
noteworthy theatrical season.
Sharing honors with Chris-
topher Plummer, Toby Rob-
bins, who has gained much
favor as Bianca in "The Tam
ing of the Shrew," stars as
Roxanna in "Cyrano."
In private life, Miss Robbins
is the wife of William Friedman,
Toronto theater owner. They
have a large number of relatives
in Detroit.
The cast of 58 in "Cyrano,"
glamorized by 145 costumes and
hundreds of props, was the third
non - Shakespearean work pre-
sented on the Stratford stage
since 1953. Edmond Rostand's
enduring romantic drama of a
cavalier with a heart as big as
his nose was first staged in Paris
in 1898. It retains its power
and its influence over audiences,
as was evidenced here at the
opening performance on Mon-
day.
Toby Robins' brilliant acting,
her poise and her fine speaking
voice, justified her selection for
the women's title role in the
drama.
The Stratford "Cyrano" pro-
duction was co-designed by Tan-
ya Moiseiwitsch and Deamond
Heeley. The music is by Louis
Applebaum, one of the most
brilliant musicians and compos-
ers in Canada. Choreography is
by Alan Lund, duels by Patrick
Crean.
"Cyrano" will have a total of
119 performances, sharing bon-
; ors in the current Stratford
season with "Macbeth," "Tam-
; ing of the Shrew" and "The
Tempest."
