WASHINGTON — President
Kennedy has asked Myer "Mike"
Feldman, one of the most im-
portant personages of Jewish
faith on the Presidential staff
and an original member of the
President's personal brain trust,
to handle liaison between the
White House and the American
Jewish community.
Feldman's function at the
White House is different and -on
a much higher level than the
roles played by David K. Niles,
who served President Truman.
and Maxwell Rabb, who handled
"Jewish Affairs" for President
Eisenhower.
As "Deputy special counsel
to the President," responsible
for vital communications with
Congress and federal agencies.
Feldman works personally with
Kennedy each day. He will per-
form the new assignment in
addition to his other duties.
Thus, Mr. Feldman's status in
the White House is far broader
than the Niles or Rabb capaci-
ties.
In his book, "The Making
of the President," Theodore
H. White listed Feldman with
Ted Sorenson and Richard
Goodwin as the trio consti-
tuting Kennedy's "personal"
brain trust, as distinct from
his "academic" brain trust
(Schlesinger, Galbraith,
Bundy, Rostow), or his "po-
litical" brain trust (O'Don-
nell, O'Brien, Donahue, Dun-
can)•.
Feldman was seen behind the
scenes in "The Making Of The
President" as an "Impressive
man, a one-time instructor of
law at the University of Penn-
sylvania, later a highly-success.
ful businessman, who had aban-
doned business to follow Ken-
nedy's star as chief of the
Senator's legislative research."
In 1958, he joined the Ken-
nedy Senate staff as legislative
assistant. He handled corres-
pondence dealing with legisla-
tion, helped draft bills, con-
ferred on the Senator's pro-
gram, and assisted with speeches
and public statements. After
Kennedy was nominated for the
Presidency, Feldman was ap-
pointed director of research for
the Kennedy-Johnson campaign.
As campaign research direc-
tor, Feldman prepared material
that helped Kennedy achieve
the crucial television debate
triumph over Richard M. Nixon.
Feldman's perceptive and rapid
anticipation of events, his in-
sight and knowledge, caused
the President to add steadily to
his White House duties. Ken-
nedy indicated abundant appre-
ciation through the extent of
reliance on him in many areas.

legislative matters, issues of
tariff and trade, oil questions,
dealings with regulatory agen-
cies, the Commerce Depart-
ment, the Post Office, and so
forth. Then, there is the draft-
ing of proclamations, execu-
tive orders, and the many
Presidential committees.
The President, since the inau-
guration, turned increasingly to
Feldman — and sometimes to
Secretary of Labor Arthur Gold-
berg — for guidance on issues
affecting Jews and Israel.
The President's decision to
place primary responsibility
for Jewish liaison on Feldman,
on top of other responsibilities,
suggests the President is paying
more attention to this concern.
He obviously wants a trusted
information source at his side
in the White House.
Kennedy is aware that among
American advocates of a fair
Near Eastern policy are many of
his most fervent supporters.
He knows that many leading
Jews have backed him to give
thrust to American progress.
But he has also become aware
in recent months of apprehen-
sion manifested after the State
Department embarked anew on
a risky wooing of Nasser's Egypt.
There is evidence that Ken-
nedy feels the reins on Near
East policy-making slipped too
far from the White House,
preoccupied as it was with
Berlin, Latin America, South-
east Asia, and other crisis
situations. State Department
career officers, sensing a
vacuum, began asserting a
one-sided, pro-Arab line at
Israel's expense.
This may account for the
President's designation of one
of his most trusted lieutenants
to maintain a daily watch.
Good-natured Mike Feldman,
now officially the White House's
"Watchman of Israel," is aware
"the watchman of Israel doth
not sleep and doth not slum-
ber."
Possessing a Jewish heart as
well as a "Jewish" brain, Mr.
Feldman is mindful of human
rights and America's obligation
to promote justice. An orphan
from the age of three, Feldman
has developed a compassionate
warmth balanced by a quality
of objective detachment —
unique equipment for a man
with his obligations.
If self-righteous zealots seek
to denounce this or that Ad-
ministration "betrayal" when
they confront Feldman at an
Israeli reception or his Temple,
their wrath will be melted by
the charm of his lovely wife, the
former Silva Moskowitz of
Philadelphia.
Feldman's Talmudic insights
made him a respected legal
authority. Naturally, it will be
impossible for him to solve all
Jewish problems brought to the
White House. But neither will
he be free to desist from them.
LONDON, (JTA) — There are
80,000 Jews now living in Hun-
gary, according to figures given
to the annual conference of the
Social-Cultural Union of P n-
garian Jews. A report on t hat
conference, held in Budapest,
reached here.
Dr. Endre Shosh, president of
the Hungarian Jewish organiza-
tion, made the report on the
country's current Jewish popula-
tion.
The Budapest conference was
attended by 120 delegates from
the Jewish communities in Hun-
gary. The main body of the
report by Dr. Shosh dealt with
the activities of Hungarian Jew-
ish institutions which, he said,
were being supported by state
funds.
