large numbers of Jews have
immigrated to Canada and it
has been among these people,
Dr. Rosenberg said, that there
has been a tendency to give dif-
ferent replies to the census
questions on religion and ethnic
origin. The tendency is particu-
larly noticeable in centers of
small Jewish population, he
said.
"We are not surprised by
the disparity between the
number of Jews in Canada by
religion and the number of
Jews by ethnic origin, which
became apparent from the
1961 census results just mad
public," said Michael Garber,
Q. C., president of the Cana-

com-
menting on the recent release
by the Dominion Bureau of
Statistics.
"The disparity is a natural
result of the census question-
naire. The Jewish population is
in the unique position that the
questions both with regard to
religion and with regard to eth-
nic origin may be answered in
the same way by simply saying
that the person is Jewish," Gar-
ber said. "With regard to any
other group of the population
the answers must be different.
The question with regard to re-
ligion is clear. There are no two
ways about it. One is either
Jewish by religion or is not
Jewish at all. This is not so
with regard to the question on
ethnic origin which is to iden-
tify the ethnic or cultural group
to which a person or his or her
ancestor on the male side be-
longed on coming to this con-
tinent and, wherever possible,
the language spoken at that time
by the person or his paternal
ancester was used to determine
the ethnic group."

The Communist East German
government recently offered
such files to the Bonn Justice
Minister.
