Thousands of students who
had studied under and labored
with Rabbi Maurice B. Pekar-
sky, director of the Hillel Foun-
dation at the University of
Chicago, are mourning his
death which occurred, in Chi-
cago, July 11. His death of a
heart attack occurred a day
after his 57th birthday.
Born in Jedwabno, Poland,
Rabbi Pekarsky came to this
country as a child, his parents
settling in Grand Rapids, Mich.,
where he received his early
education. He was graduated
with cum laude honors from
the University of Michigan in
1930 and earned a Master's

JERUSALEM — Response to
an appeal for volunteer construc-
tion workers to meet the housing
needs of new immigrants has
been so good that legislation to
curb non immigrant housing may
not be necessary, Josef Almogi,
the Acting Housing Minister re-
ported Wednesday.
He said the first 150 of the
volunteers will be assigned to
jobs this week and that the re-
sponse to the call had been much
more enthusiastic than had orig-
inally been anticipated.
The official also disclosed that
an "amicable agreement" had
been reached with municipalities
and building contractors in
which both agreed to voluntary
restrictions to release enough
building workers to meet immi-
grant housing schedules.
