This year about 1,500 Ameri-
can Jewish youth will visit Is-
rael. They will be sponsored by
the Jewish Agency and the
American Zionist Council in co-
operation with various Zionist
and non-Zionist youth organiza-
tions.
The largest contingent this
year — as in previous years —
will be the 750 youth going on
the Summer Institute of the
Youth Department of the Jew-
ish Agency. During the six
weeks stay in Israel, each group
will spend two weeks in study,
two weeks in sightseeing and
travel throughout the country
and two weks working in a kib-
butz or an immigrant village.
For those who want to spend
more time there, the American
Zionist Council sponsors a ten-
week "Summer in Kibbutz"
work program.
The Department of Education
and Culture organizes special
"Bar Mitzvah' Pilgrimages.
There is also the High School
group for those who study He-
brew and want to utilize their
trip to Israel specially to be-
come more fluent in the lan-
guage. The Torah Education
Department sponsors special
study programs for Yeshiva
students.
PATWA, whose main task is
to assist the immigration of pro-
fessionals to Israel, conducts a
"Summer Work Program" for

college students in their third
year or more. They spend 10
weeks in Israel, working in
their special fields. There are
also three programs of longer
duration in Israel, organized by
the Youth Department and the
Education Department, respec-
tively.
For those who want a longer
work and study experience,
there is the American Work-

He referred particularly to
the Jewish Educators' Summer
Seminars conducted by the De-
partment which enabled some
700 Jewish educational direc-

benefit from refresher courses
conducted in Israel.

book as a paperback.
Werth's book describes the
role that was played by the
Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee,
which was dissolved in the
course of the anti-Semitic cam-
paign that was instituted by
Stalin. It reviews the horrors
that accompanied the "doctors'
plot" and reviews the sad status
of Russian Jewry.

Dr. Samuel M. Blumenfield
director of the Department of
Education and Culture, stated
that "The proverbial bridge

citizens."
Therefore Werth, who denies
that all Russian Jews speak
Yiddish and are interested in
Israel, asserts that there are
two USSR Jewish problems:
"that of the minority of 'old-
time' Jews who are not allowed
to be as particularist as they
would like to be; and that of
the majority of 'modern' Jews
1who are not, as a rule, allowed
! to be as fully assimilated as
they would like to be, and who
combine complete Soviet loyalty
with the lurking suspicion that
even if they aren't discrimi-
nated against today, they may
I be discriminated against tomor-
1 row, and that, in any case,
their sons stand a much poorer
chance than a 'real' Russian of
getting, say, into the diplomatic
service-"
