Argentina Seeks to Uproot
`Sporadic Intolerance Fruits'

BUENOS AIRES, (JTA)—Lt. Gen. Pedro E: Aramburu.
former Argentine president during the provisional government
that ousted Juan Peron from the presidency of this country,
sharply condemned the new wave of anti-Semitism here.
Significance was attached to his statement due. to the fact
that he now heads a new political parts, Union Nacional, and
his name has been advanced as the possible next president of
Argentia.
Pointing out that the world owes much to Jewish scientists,
and that racist or religious persecutions have no place in Argen-
tine life or traditions, Gen. Aramburu said that the recent man-
ifestations of anti-Semitism here "are the sporadic fruits of intol-
erance, which must be repudiated by the Argentinian people."
At tb.g. same time, however, Dr. Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo,
editor of the ultra right-wing nationalist weekly, "Second Re-
public," published an article accusing Argentina's "unassimi-
lated Israelites" of _"provoking" the recent outbreaks of anti-
Semitism. The article employed the discredited Nazi-Communist
canard of alleged Jewish involvement in "financial scandals,"
accusing DAIA, the central organization of Argentine Jewry, of
being headed by such persons.

JERUSALEM — An Israeli scientist disclosed Tuesday that Hebrew Uni-
versity laboratories have developed special crystals of a type which have been
used to transmit and receive radar signals to and from the planet Venus.
This disclosure was made by Dr. Zeev Levy in connection with an an-
nouncement that the first World Conference on Paramagnetic Resonance will
open at the Hebrew University next Monday with the participation of 150
scientists from 17 countries, including the United States and Soviet Russia.
Other countries sending delegates are Italy Japan, Britain and France. Para-
magnetic resonance makes possible transmission and reception of high power
radar signals and very low power electromagnetic waves. The field is of inter-
est to civilian and military industry and to the medical profession.
Prof. Levy noted that the special crystals can be used to transmit sharply
focused light rays which theoretically could be used to supply energy to space-
ships. 'Experiments have indicated that these rays can melt steel at distances
of 700 feet.
Participants in the conference will include Prof. M. Mankov of the USSR,
scientific advisers to NATO and the United States Navy and Air Force. repre-
sentatives of such firms as International Business Machines, Lockheed Aircraft
Company, Radio Corporation of America and General Electric Corp.

Israel-Recognized Algeria Hesitates
to Offer Cordial Reply to Friendship

(Special to The Jewish News)

Israel's dove of peace to Algeria has not returned with an olive branch.

Both attempts by the 14-year-old nation on the Mediterranean to woo the goodwill of
the newly-proclaimed Moslem state have been met by silence.

Foreign Minister Golda Meir on June 25 offered technical assistance to Algeria in
speech before the Knesset. On July 8, Israel recognized Algeria's independence.

a

There has been no comment from Algiers. It is believed that the government of Ben
Youssef Ben Khedda is inclined to avoid taking any part in the Arab-Israeli conflict. On
the other hand. however, it is also believed that Ben Khedda
wants to avoid showing any cordiality to Israel that could he
criticized by his principal internal opponent, Vice-Premier
Momammed Ben Bella.
.
Ben Bella has visited Cairo three times. conferring with
Egypt's President Gamal Abdel Nasser. and is considered as
ready to follow the Arab League policies of anti-Israelism.
Israel is openly campaigning to influence Premier Ben
Khedda and other moderate Algerian leaders to adopt ad inde-
pendent policy vis-a-vis Israel instead of becoming involved
automatically in the Arab states' hostility to her.

In her speech to Israel's parliament on June 25, Mrs. Meir
said:
"We shall be glad to establish with independent Algeria
the same framework of beneficial and meaningful mutual rela-
tions as exist between us and other new states."

Premier Ben Khedda

(World leaders have gone on record in praise of Israel's
assistance to the newly-emerging states of Africa.)

Official recognition came with the Foreign Ministray confirmation that ". .. Israel recog-
nized the independence of Algeria which has now joined the family of sovereign nations.'

3,000th From Cuba:

On his arrival at
at the Miami airport with his wife and daughter, the 3,000th
Jewish refugee from Cuba to receive migration assistance
from United Hias Service was greeted by the worldwide
agency's executive director, James P. Rice (left). The large-
scale resettlement program is being carried out in coopera-
tion with the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, the New
York Association for New Americans and other Jewish
resettlement agencies in the United States and Caribbean
countries.

It has been reported that official circles in Israel did not expect a friendly response.
But there also have been reports from Israeli correspondents in Algeria that leaders loyal
to Ben Khedda are in favor of relations with Israel on the basis of Algeria's social and
economic interests.

Israel must simply wait during this state of flux in Algeria until the alignment of
power is set. It is not known what behind-the-scenes efforts are being made by Israel
to thwart the attempts of Arab League sympathizer Ben Bella to win control of the Algerian
provisional . government.

It is believed that Ben Khedda did not respond to Israel's peace offerings because
he fears any show of cordiality to Israel would jeopardize his compromise efforts with
his dissident Vice Premier.

Meanwhile, Israeli newspapers have continued to urge the remaining Jews in Algeria

to emigrate to Israel, or if not Israel, to - France.
