A trtherte to the memory of
50,000 Greek Jews who died at
the hands of the Nazis has
been made by Dr. Nahum
Goldmann, the President of
the World Jewish Congress,
in a message on the unveiling
of a monument erected by the
Jewish community of Salonica
in honor of the Greek Jewish
martyrs. The WJC was repre-
sented at the ceremony by A.
L. Easterman, of London, Di-
rector for Europe of the Inter-
national Affairs Department.
Dr. Goldman said "the Jew-
ish people will never forget
the Greek Jewish victims of
the Nazi tragedy." The WJC
leader expressed the hope that
the Greek Jewish community
would "continue to contribute
to the development of the
Jewish people in the future."
The massive stone monument,
surmounted by a modernistic
Menorah, was unveiled in the
Jewish cemetery in Salonika
in the presence of representa-
tives of the Greek authorities,
delegates from major Jewish
bodies and Jews from all the
Greek communities.

Disaster Service
About 85 cents of every dol-
lar the Red Cross spends on
disaster relief goes for what
is known as "long-term assist-
ance." This can be in the form
of food, clothing and mainten-
ance, or medical care and re-
placing of lost occupational
equipment, or in the rebuilding
and repair of homes. In the
1960-61 fiscal year, the Red
Cross spent. nearly $9.7 million
to assist disaster victims. This
money helped 28,300 families
pick up the pieces of their
disaster-destroyed lives and
start anew.

New Weidman Novel:
Story of an Author

The publication of Jerome
Weidman's new novel, "The
. Sound of Bow Bells," will bring
the total of Weidman's pub-
' lished works to 19, not includ-
ing three plays.
Weidman has, since 1937,
authored 13 novels, four collec-
tions of short stories and two
volumes of essays and travel.
In addition, his three musical
plays
• are now available in book
form from Random House:
"Fiorello! and "Tenderloin," co-
authored with George Abbott,
and Weidman's own adaptation
of his novel, "I Can Get It for
You Wholesale," now playing
on Broadway and soon to be
published by Random House.
"The Sound of Bow Bells,"
■ coming from Random House on
July 25, is the Literary Guild
selection for August. It is the
story of Sam Silver, born on
the Lower East Side of New
1York, who achieved wealth and
fame as an author and lost his
sense of values on the way up-
Itown. The book is his unsenti-
mental journey into the past,
in the course of which he takes
soundings on the milestones of
his life and the people who
were important to him. His re-
collections take him into the
heart of the literary world, as
he remembers the publishers,
authors, agents, editors and
critics whose influence meant
most to him.
In an essay he wrote about
"The Sound of Bow Bells" for
the Literary Guild Review,
Weidman answers the question
which will occur to many read-
ers: Did it all really happen?
"I don't know," Weidman con-
cludes. "Not with the sort of
knowledge I would want to
have if I were testifying under
oath in a court of law. But
the novelis t's testimony is
rooted in a less circumscribed
truth-the truth of the imagina-
tion. Out of that truth, in the
construction of which I have
spent all the years of my adult
life, I can say to the reader
. . . : 'Yes, this is the way it
might have happened'."
