"Thank you, Dr. Salk."
I catch myself whispering
something like that whenever
I watch the children headed
for the sun and fun. I'm so
thankful to be free of the haunt-
ing fear of polio that used to
return each summer.
This summer, I'm putting my
gratitude into more than words.
I'm giving ... in the name of
each of my children who will
never know the pain of polio
. . . to the Salk Institute for
Biological Studies.
For there are still many
threats to my family's health
. . . from the common cold to
cancer ... killers and cripplers
that strike indiscriminately.
Scientists all over the world are
searching for ways to control
them.
It makes sense to me that
