Police Department Solicits Aid
of City's Clergy for Moral Support

The Detroit Police Depart-
ment solicited the aid and sup-
port of the city's clergy last
week in one of the largest inter-
faith gatherings ever held here.
More than 1,000 were in at-
tendance for the "Police and
Religious Leaders • Conference
on Crime" last Friday at the
Veterans Memorial Building.
The all-day session was pre-
sented with the cooperation of
the Detroit Council of Churches,
the Jewish Community Council,
the Roman Catholic Archdio-
cese of Detroit and the Lu-
theran Synodical conference.

ported the
topic, "What the Citizen Can Do
to Help Law Enforcement."
A special guest was Raymond
Burr of television fame through
his role as Perry Mason in the
show bearing that name.
Observations on the confer-
ence were given by the Very
Rev, Msgr. Arthur M. Karey,
vice chancellor of the Roman
Catholic Archdiocese of De-
troit; the Rev. Carlyle Stew-
art, pastor of the People's
Community Church and po-
lice chaplain; and Rabbi Mor-
ris Adler of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
The gist of the conference
was the need for moral support
of the community to law en-
forcement.
Rabbi Adler told the assem-
blage that many people still
have a negative impression of
the police department and that
the stereotype must be over-
come.
"They are there to create
congenial conditions." he said.
"The police are the servants of
the people and guardians of the
city's welfare."
Rabbi Adler told his "col-
leagues" that "we are morally
deputized by Commissioner Ed-
wards to carry the message (to
their respective congrega-
tions)."

Film on Jewish Sabbath
Service Gets Student
M.A. Degree at N.Y.U.

The low or middle income
family in America usually
spends nearly the same propor-
tion of its income on automo-
biles, furniture, appliances and
house repairs or additions as
the high income family, the
University of Michigan Survey
Research Center reports.

A naturalistic film depicting
the preparation for and ritual of
the Jewish Sabbath service has
been produced by a New York
University student.
Irwin Goldress, 24, of Albany,
N.Y., produced the film under
the auspices of NYU's depart-
ment of television, motion pic-
tures, and radio as part of his
Master of Arts thesis. He is the
first NYU student to receive a
graduate degree in the field of
motion picture production.
Entitled "On the Seventh
Day," the 16 mm. sound film
was shot in the setting of a
Brooklyn home and in a Crown
Heights (Brooklyn) synagogue
whose Rabbi and congregation
agreed to reenact the services
for Goldress and his crew. The
running time of the film is 20
minutes.
The cast includes a "family"
of two grandparents, two par-
ents, and two children. The
grandfather is played by Dr. Ed-
ward Horowitz, author of "How
the Hebrew Language Grew"
and faculty member of the He-
brew department of Jefferson
High School in Brooklyn.
