Algerian Jeers _Plead: 'Save Our Childress •
200 Unaccompanied Child Refugees
Arrive in France; More Expected
(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

PARIS — A "Save Our Chil-
dren" campaign was in full
swing Wednesday among the re-
maining Jews of Algeria, par-
ticularly in the strife-torn city
of Oran, where new bloodshed
is feared with only three days
to go before Algeria becomes
independent under Moslem rule.
Some 200 unaccompanied
child refugees have arrived in
France and several hundred
more are expected before July
1. The total may reach 3,000
before the end of the year, ac-
cording to projections prepared
by Jewish social workers.
Looming over. the Algerian
drama is the tragedy of count-
less children threatened with
physical violence and exposed
to daily scenes of unparalleled
bloodshed and violence. Their
parents are anxious to get them
to metropolitan France at the
earliest possible moment.
Jewish children are con-
sidered as under special
threat because of the notori-
ous anti-Jewish sentiments of
the Moslem crowds, wiich
many here fear may run amok
when Algeria becomes inde-
pendent.
One hundred-and-fifty Jewish
child refugees have been placed
in Jewish communal institutions
in Strasbourg. The Fond Social
Junif Unifie, the principal Jew-
ish welfare agency, is making
special efforts to arrange simi-
lar facilities in Paris and cen-
ters.
(A report to the New York
Times from Algiers this week
stated that of the 280,000 who
left Algeria since April, 60,000
were Jews; that "Jewish com-
munities have virtually disap-
peared; that only 2,000 of the
original 18,000 Jews remain in
Constantine).
Young Israel Organization Leaves
Ranks of American Jewish Congress
GREENFIELD PARK, N.Y.,
(JTA)—Young Israel, an organ-
ization fostering orthodox
Judaism among youth and
adults and claiming a 125,000
membership, announced at its
jubilee convention here that it
has left the ranks of the Amer-
ican Jewish Congress.
In making the announcement
Rabbi David H. Hill. president
of the National Council of
Young Israel. told the four
hundred delegates "the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress has, time
and time again, taken stands
which are opposed to Orthodox
philosophies."
He cited the stand recently
taken by the American Jewish
Congress on the Shehita Bill
and on the Adoption Laws and
said that the AJC had blocked
the participation of Orthodox
Jews at its recent convention
by holding it in a non-kosher
hotel.
Rabbi Hill claimed that
"the American Jewish Con-
gress had turned into a Civil
Liberties Union." He em-
phasized that while Young
Israel encouraged the fight
for civil liberties, it felt that
this work was already being
done adequately by numerous
other bodies.
Rabbi Hill added that the- Na-
tional Council of Young Israel
had done all in its power to
influence the acts of the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress but to no
avail. The organization has been
affiliated with the American
Jewish Congress for over 15
years.

erican Jewish Congress, es-
pecially since the reason
given for their action mis-
represents the character of
the Congress. It is not true,
as they say, that CongreSs is
merely a 'civil liberties' or-
ganization.
"The concern of Congress
with problems of civil rights
and separation of church .and
state sterns from its deep com-.
mitment to the defense of the
rights of the Jewish community
and the vital interests of Jews
in the preservation of religious
liberty. While Young Israel
may differ with Congress on a
question such as Federal aid
1 to parochial schools, it cannot
properly claim that its view
must prevail over the demo-
cratically arrived at decision
of the governing council of the
Congress in which Young
Israel as well as all other af-
filiated organizations have been
fully represented."

Gives 54 Acres to
Suburb of Philly
PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) Les-
sing J. Rosenwald and Mrs.
Rosenwald plan to donate 75
additional acres of their large
estate in the Philadelphia suburbs
to Abington Township, for use as
a public park.
The Rosenwalds had already
given the township 54 acres, now
used as Alverthorpe Park. More
than 12,000 persons visited the
park last week, since it was of-
ficially opened by the township.
The Rosenwalds indicated that,
in addition to enlarging the park,
they plan also to will their for-
mer residence on their estate to
the township for use as a cultural
project. The home is now used as
a repository for the Lessing
Rosenwald collection of paintings,
prints and manuscripts.
