Test Case in Chicago on Cantors'
Authority to Officiate at Weddings

CHICAGO (JTA)—A divorce
case on trial here, behind closed
chamber doors, before Superior
Court Judge David A. Canel, may
result in a ruling that could
affect the right of a cantor to
officiate at a Jewish wedding in
the State of Illinois.
Four rabbis have been called
as witnesses in the case, and the
court has appointed a Jewish at-
torney. Aaron Cohen, to act as
"friend of the court" and help
advise the judge. Furthermore,
the judge himself has served four
terms as a president of a syna-
gogue. IUNS, of suburban Rogers
Park, according to The Sentinel,
Jewish weekly here.
The case grew out of a petition
of annulment of marriage filed
by Mrs. Judith 0. Polland against
her husband, Arnold Polland. She
claims that their marriage in
1958, was "illegal" because the
wedding was performed by a
cantor, Moses Silverman, and not
by a rabbi. She contends that

Dr Robert A. Soblen, con-
victed Russian spy who van-
ished. risking the forfeit of
$100,000 bail that was gathered
among his friends, was arrested
Wednesday in Tel Aviv.
He is believed to have gone
there seeking a cure for leu-
kemia from which he is suffer-
ing and which is believed to
be speeding his death. He is
out on bail under a life prison
sentence.

Israel does not have an extra-
dition treaty with the United
States, but is not expected to
permit him to remain in the
land, in spite of the policy of
permitting any Jew who wishes
to settle there.
Soblen, who reached Israel
on a phony passport of his
dead Canadian brother, has
retained an Israeli attorney
to defend him.
He has been arraigned offi-
cial by Israel officials and the
United States has let it be
known that every effort will be
made to bring him back to
serve his life sentence.

witnesses, who are believed to
have testified about the Jewish

Weiss, executive secretary of the
Chicago Rabbinical Council. Rab-
bi Menscheloff is the spiritual
leader of KINS, the synagogue
which Judge Canel served as
president.

Australia Hunts Nazi
Who Mailed Blade to
Eichmann in Prison

SYDNEY (JTA) — A search
was started by authorities in
Australia for a former Nazi
who tried to smuggle a piece
of razor blade from this coun-
try to Adolf Eichmann, while
the latter was awaiting execu-
tion in an Israeli prison.
The piece of blade was sent
stamp affixed to a letter which
was intercepted by the Israeli
authorities. The person being
sought was not identified.

JOHANNESBURG — The Post-
master General sent an apology
Wednesday to Helen Suzman, a
member of the South African
Parliament for transmitting to
her a telegram from a former
Nazi agent which described Karl
Marx as -a cursed Jew."
The former agent, Robey Leib-
brandt, who was imprisoned for
treason during World War II,
sent the telegram after Miss Suz-
man publicly attacked a new
movement Liebbrandt is organ-
izing in South Africa.
In the telegram. he told the
deputy that "Mordecai alias Karl
Marx. father and founder of mod-
ern Communism. was a cursed
Jew.
In the apology. the Postmaster
General said the telegram should
not have been accepted by the
postoffice because of a postal
act ban on offensive messages.

Hebrew Schools and Adas Shalom
Set Up Combined Educational Unit

of United Hebrew Schools. and
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal. of Adas
Shalom Synagogue, announce
that beginning September an in-
tegrated Hebrew School and Sun-
day School Program will be set
up at the Adas Shalom Syna-
gogue.
All students, boys and girls,
upon reaching the age of eight
will be required to attend the
regular Hebrew School Program
conducted by the United Hebrew
Schools in cooperation with the
Adas Shalom Synagogue. The
new program will constitute a
change to six study hours a week.
Children will attend the com-
bined school on Sundays, Mon-
days and Wednesdays—or Sun-
days, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Each day's study session will last
two hours,
Children between the ages of
five and seven who are in the
Kindergarten, first and second
grade classes of the Sunday
School, will continue to attend
one day a week on Sundays

under the jurisdiction of the
synagogue. Similarly the ninth
and tenth grade classes of the
confirmation study program will
be under the guidance of the
congregation.

It is the belief of both Con-
gregation Adas Shalom and the
United Hebrew Schools that this
program will intensify one as-
pect of Jewish education. The
requirement that all girls attend
a full Hebrew School program
starting at the age of eight brings
them up to the level of the cur-
rent requirement for boys. The
regular schedule is being in-
creased from five to six hours
per week. Furthermore, it will
be possible for children to par-
ticipate in co-curricular activi-
ties such as Chazanut, Torah
reading classes and other en-
richment projects.

The Adas Shalom office of the
United Hebrew Schools is open
from 9 to 1 Monday through
Thursday during July for regis-

tration.
