MIJMFORD U I G S By SIM SHAPIRO School ended last Tuesday, but there are many students that will not be able to forget school completely over the sum- mer. Most important among these are the new officers of Student Council. Chosen in the June 5 election were Mickey Eisen- berg, president; Howard Shul- man, vice president; Cheryl Spector, treasurer: Fern Dorf, corresponding secretary; and Vicki Miller, recording secre- tary. Wednesday was the culmina- tion of public school education for 618 graduates. Emerging into the adult world, the •sen- iors did find time to take their last fling as part of Mumford at the senior prom last night. The prom, entitled "Kalapana," was held at Masonic Temple. In this class was the first group of students to participate in the Science and Arts program at Mumford. Irwin Carson grad- uated at the head of the class. In athletics, Mumford won the City tennis title for the fifth straight time. The track team finished second in the City after winning the East Side crown. The golf team again won the East Side championship. The baseball team was the only disappointment of the season, closing with a 2-7, won-lost, record. With this, I close my final Mumford Musings column. For four years I have been a part of Mumford, and for a year- and-a-half it has been my pleasure to report to the read- ers of The Jewish News the happenings in and around school. Schachters Plant Tree in Jerusalem * Quiz Box By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copywright, 1962, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) Why do we affix a Mezuzah to the doorpost? This act is a fulfillment of a - Biblical commandit which said, "And thou Shalt write them (these words) upon the doorposts of thy house" (Deut., 6:9). The commentaries men- tion at least three motives for this requirement. Some authori- ties consider this a means of protecting the home from evil spirits (Rashi - Menachoth 33b; Zohar Deut. 264a). A second motive, in some measure simi- lar to the first, claims that the Mezuzah signifies that the Al- mighty protects the house from general physical harm (Yeru- shalmi, Peah, Cr. 1.). A third opinion claims that the motive of the Mezuzah is to remind the individual of the presence of the Almighty and his obligation towards him (Sifre, Debarim 31) (Maimonides, Laws of Me- zuzah) Sefer Hachinuch 48. , MRS.
