Stratford Festiva 1 Draws Detroiters; Applebaum's Music Lauded

Special to The Jewish News

STRATFORD, Ontario.—This
interesting community, which
10 years ago began to attract
attention among American as
well as Canadian communities
as the center for the propaga-
tion of art, for the staging of
Shakespearean plays and the
advancement of music, opera
and drama, again is drawing
upon Detroit as a major attrac-
tion for summer entertainment.
Already, in the first week of
the festival, scores of Detroiters
have arranged to be here for
the music as well as the drama
festivals.
With emphasis upon three
Shakespearean plays— "Mac-
beth," "The Taming of the
Shrew" and "The Tempest"—
Stratford has become headquar-
ters for significant musical
events.
Louis Applebaum is the
musical director for "The
Gondoliers," one of the sea-
son's added attractions.
Then there are added con-
certs and other events which
have three musical directors—
Glenn Gould, pianist; Leonard
Rose, cellist, and Oscar Shum-
sky, violinist. These noted
musicians, here for the third
season, are serving as soloists
as well as directors- of special
performances.
"Cyrano de Bergerac" will be
one of the season's attractions.
It will open on July 30, with
music by Applebaum, and the
stage designs by Tanya Moysei-

witsch, whose designs also fea-
ture "The Taming of the
Shrew."
Applebaum composed the
musical score for "Macbeth,"
and this eminent Canadian
musician's contributions con-
tinue to enhance the Stratford
productions.
Toby Robins is among this
year's Stratford stars, appear-
ing as Bianca in "The Taming
of the Shrew" and as Roxanne
in "Cyron de Bergerac."
Len Birman, an understudy
for Christopher Plummer as
Macbeth, is Ciathness in "Mac-
beth," Adrian in "The Temp-
est" and Cadet in "Cyrano."
Toby Robins in private life
is the wife of William Fried-
man, Toronto theater owner.
The Friedmans are frequent
visitors in Detroit, Toby's hus-
band being the nephew of Dr.
Abraham Cohen, Fred Cohen,
Morris Cohen and Mrs. Al
Fisher.
While there were some flaws
in the opening performances of
the three Shakespearean plays,
the immensity of the Stratford
project remains one of the im-
pressive accomplishments in art
on this continent. The tenth
anniversary of the plays, now
being marked at this season of
the Shakespearean Festival, is
becoming a real drawing force
for lovers of the theater, music
and the arts.
