BUENOS AIRES, (JTA)—Po-
lice began a search for the gun-
men who fired a machinegun
burst from a fast-moving car at
2 am. hitting the building of the
Yiddische Zeitung, largest Jew-
ish daily newspaper in Latin
America. The bullets perforated
a metal curtain and several win-
dows. Because of the time of the
attack, no one was injured. The
building has a permanent guard
of a single policeman.
Three city workers who were
repairing a sidewalk near the
building threw themselves to the
ground when they heard the gun-
fire. The gunman also machine-
gunned a clothing shop belong-
ing to a Jewish owner but with-
out casualties. In Bahia Blanca,
anti-Semites smeared the Baron
Hirsch monument.

GENEVA — Aharon Becker,
secretary general of the Hista-
drut, Israel's labor federation,
Tuesday called on delegates to
the 46th conference of the In-
ternational Labor Organization
to "ensure that technological
progress is :iarnessed for the
welfare of mankind." _
Becker, who is also a deputy
member of the governing body
of ILO, extended the greetings
of Israel's labor movement to
delegates of new member-nations
of the ILO. He said he was con-
fident that states which had
newly won independence would
have much to contribute to the
work of the labor organization.
At the same time, he added,
"they need and are entitled to
the cooperation of the advanced
countries to speed up their eco-
nomic and social progress. It is
the desire and interest of all of
us that the required assistance
be given on an adequate scale."
He said there was no doubt
that ILO had made a substantial
contribution towards and inter-
national code of social legisla-
tion, "and in the last decade it
has also accomplished much in
the way of international aid. It is
up to us to work out here a
comprehensive and ambitious
program aimed at a radical social
improvement throughout t h e
world."

`Gloomy' Future Seen for Algerian .Jews:
Forecast Moslem Prosecution, Reprisals

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The Jews
in Algeria are free to stay there
or leave, Dr. Nahum Goldmann
told a meeting of the Israel
executive of the World Jewish
Congress.
However, he expressed doubt
whether the Jews have any fu-
ture in Algeria, despite the
guarantees given them under
the agreement concluded in
Evian between the French gov-
ernment and the Moslem-
Algerian liberation movement.
Goldmann noted that for the
present, Jews have been ac-
corded the same status given to
other Europeans in independent
Algeria. He expressed the opin-
ion that, under its Moslem lib-
eration movement's "shrewd
and realistic" leadership, Al-
geria would become the Number
One Arab state within a year
or two.
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Warn-
ings against the possible perse-
cution of Jews in Algeria by the
Moslem majority there, after
Algeria becomes independent
of France, were voiced by a
group of experts participating
in a radio discussion on Station
WNEW, entitled "The Algerian
Jew: The Man in the Middle."
The warnings came after one
of the participants in the panel,
Abdel A. Chanderli. permanent
representative in New York for
the provisional Algerian Nation-
alist Government, declared that,
while Algerian Jews will be
"welcome to stay," some Jews

may face prosecution for having
been lined up on the side of the
OAS,...,the French rebel under-
ground opposed to an independ-
ent Algeria.
"Some members of the Jew-
ish minority," he said, had lined
up with the Europeans killing
Moslems in Algeria, stating "it
is even acknowledged by many
Jews."
Senators Jacob K. Javits and
Kenneth B. Keating, members
of the panel, advocated the need
for international aid to those
Algerian Jews who wish to
emigrate either to France or to
Israel. Other participants in the
radio discussion included Sam-
uel Blumenfeld, secretary of
the American Committee for
