Wisconsin Court Bans - — Michigan's Newest & Most Luxurious Motel State Transportation A HOME AWAY FROM HOME FOR YOUR for Religious Schools -11/4' ....A ...tt, MADISON, Wis., (JTA) — The Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down this week a contro- versial state parochial school bus law which was to have be- come effective next July 1. By a four to two decision the high court ruled that the law, which would have provided state aid for transportatiOn of private and parochial school pupils, have violated a consti- tutional ban on expenditure of public funds for the benefit of religious societies or religious or theological seminaries." The legislature had sought to avoid the constitutional issue by providing that the pupils were to he taken to the nearest public school instead of to their own. The Supreme Court de- clared this did not change the fact that "practically all of the non-publi• schools whose pupils are to be transported under the attacked act are operated by religious organizations." The heart of the controversy is whether such legislation benefits the children or the non-public schools. California, Maryland and Kentucky Su- preme Courts have held that such laws are constitutional on grounds they benefit the chil- dren. High courts in New York. Delaware, Oklahoma and Wash- ington have taken the other view and banned such aid. OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS . . . 4.1 \_.. "-...---- EMBASSY MOTEL 14380 WEST 8 MILE ROAD Bet. INTEREST Protests Lodged Against Georgia U's 'Merchant of Venice' ATLANTA, (JTA) — Protests against a University of Georgia production of Shakespeare's "Mer- chant of Venice," put on by the campus. theater last February, were continued by Rabbi Na- thaniel Zimskind, Hillel director at the university. According to Rabbi Zimskind, a Jewish child in Athens, whom he did not identify, has been taunted since last winter, being called "Shylock" by Christian fellow students. The Southern Israelite printed an editorial by Adolph Rosen- berg, editor supporting Rabbi Zimskind's protest. The protest had been sent at first to Dr. Leighton Ballew, chairman of the university's speech department, who had scheduled the Shake- sperian play. When Ballew refused the Hillel director's request for cancellation of the "Merchant of Venice" pro- duction, Rabbi Zimskind carried his protest to Dean John 0. Edson, of the university's Col- lege of Arts and Sciences. How- ever, the Shakespeare play went on as scheduled. The part of "Shylock" was played in the production by Prof. Richard Weinman, a member of the university's faculty, who, ac- cording to Ballew, "voiced no disapproval but did point out that it was the most interesting and- best role' he had ever played."
