Educators Urge
Day School Aid

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.—
Resolutions calling upon the
Council of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds to extend
financial support to all - day
schools, the re-study and re-
evaluation of teacher training
schools and
an increase in r•
the exchange
of informa-
tion and ex-
perience be-
tween Jewish
educators in
America a n d
those abroad,
were adopted
at the closing
session of the
36th annual Dr. Diamond
conference of the National
Council for Jewish Education.
The 200 leaders of Jewish
education who attended the
Conference, also emphasized
the need to raise the prestige
of the teacher by strengthening
his educational standards, as
well as his economic and social
requirements. The educators
authorized a study of the effect
that the extension of teaching
hours by the public schools was
having on the afternoon He-
brew schools. Electronic teach-
ing aids to facilitate the study
of Hebrew by the growing num-
ber of people who wish to learn
the language, were also con-
sidered at the meeting.
Dr. Joseph Diamond of To-
ronto was re-elected to his sec-
ond term as president of the
Council.
Among the prominent edu-
cators at the conference were
Albert Elazar Prof. Shlomo Ma-
renof of Detroit.

Walk With Pride

By Mrs. Charles R. (Gert
Unger) Cornfield

Now can you be made to realize,
You, who do not even surmise;
You, who are fortunate to be born
a Jew.
Hold up your head and walk with
pride,
Yours is a dignity to show, not hide.
Let us try to see ourselves, just as
we are,
Gentle and kind, more human by far,
Than others who preach brotherly
love.
Good will toward man, yet are not
above
The crulest indignities the world has
ever known,
Inhumanity to man, never atoned!
We, on the other hand, go cur way,
Accepting, not belittling, those who
may
Seek divine guidance and a different
light.
Which is every man's undeniable
right.
So hold your head high and be grate-
ful, too,
That yours is the honor of being a
Jew.

JERUSALEM — Some 5,000
children took part Wednesday in
the "first fruit" assemblies held
here as part of the public obser-
vance of Shavuot, both in the
capital and throughout Israel.
The holiday commemorates
both the giving of the Ten Com-
mandments on Mount Sinai and
the traditional Festival of the
First Harvests. Dressed in white,
the children marched through
the streets carrying baskets of
fruits. They later attended a
ceremony with a special program
of songs and dances.

Damage was caused to the
home, but no one was injured.
The Baron and his entire family
were home at the time the ex-
plosive went off.
The bombing is believed here
to have been caused by Baron de
Rothschild's support of President
de Gaulle's Algerian policy.

NEW YORK — A plot to fix
prices and restrain trade in
kosher and kosher style meats
and in frankfurter and hambur-
ger rolls was charged by a federal
grand jury here Tuesday against
14 distributor companies, 17 indi-
viduals and three trade associa-
tions. They do a business of
540,000,000 dollars a year in the
New York metropolitan area.
Morris Horn, business manager
of Local 627 of the Provision
Salesmen and Distributors Union
of the Amalgamated Meat Cut-
ters and Butcher Workmen of
North America, was named in
all three indictments handed up
by the grand jury. He is also
chairman of the greater New
York Roll Bakers Association.
The indictments in the meat
cases charged that retail prices
of the meats are fixed by pre-
arrangement: that the processors
refused to sell to any jobber
who was not a member of the
union nor to any retailer not
approved by the retailers associ-
ation, and that high prices were
maintained by the conspiracy.
Each count of the three indict-
ments carries a maximum penalty
of a year in prison and a $50,000
fine for each individual convicted
and a $50,000 dollar fine for
concerns and trade associations.

style" on foods that are not
kosher.
Commissioner of Markets Al-
bert S. Pacetta said that depart-
ment inspectors would issue sum-
monses to violators of the kosher
food regulations.
