14th anniversary and will mark
the opening of Israel's "Decade
of the Negev" during which the
vast desert area is to be devel-
oped, in large measure with the
aid of Israel Bond funds.
Reservations for the dinner
are being taken at the Israel
Bond office, 8522 W. McNichols,
DI. 1-5707.
Borman this week released a
statement by Dr. Joseph J.
Schwartz, vice president of the
Israel Bond Organization, an-
nouncing that the first contin-
gent of Israeli settlers will go
to the new city of Arad this
month and will be followed by
160 families , who will establish
the new town. This will mark
the beginning of the new Negev
activities in a new city that is
expected to gro to a com-
munity of 40,000 people.
"The opening of Arad to
settlement will serve to dra
atize the intensive pioneeri
effort involved in reclaimin
the desert and the part play-
ed by Israel Bonds in turning
the wasteland of the Negev
into a productive area for the
future growth of the entire
country," Dr. Schwartz said.
"The development in the
Negev must evoke a new kind
of dedicated response from
American Jewry. Unless the
people of Israel have the
means to proceed with this
herculean effort, they cannot
succeed in effectively absorb-
ing the present great new
wave of immigration. What is
now transpiring in Arad testi-
fies to the significant role of
Israel Bonds in enabling Is-
rael to move forward in its
population growth and eco-
