Why is the service of the
first night of Shavuot delayed
until after nightfall?
The Bible prescribes that the
festival of Shavuot is to come
after "seven complete weeks"
are counted following the first
day of Passover (Leviticus 23:
15). Since the emphasis is upon
that fact that seven "complete"
weeks are to pass, tradition has
prescribed that the festival of
Shavuot service on the first
night be chanted only after
nightfall, so that the period be-
tween Passover and Shavuot be
completely fulfilled and com-
pleted.

Why does the congregation
rise when the Decalogue is
read from the Torah on the
morning of Shavuot?
Shavuot is the anniversary of
the Revelation of the Torah on
Mount Sinai. When the Israel-
ites heard these immortal words
they stood in awe and rever-
ence. The reading of the Tor-
ah on Shavuot is in a way a re-
enactment of this episode and so
the congregation rises to stand
at attention like their ancestors
did at Sinai.
*
Why are some synagogues
decorated with greenery on
the Shavuot festival?
Not all authorities followed
this practice. Those who did,

claimed that the green decora-
tions were symbolic of Mount
Sinai which was bedecked with
green foliage in honor of the
occasion of revelation. There
are some who claim that deco-
rating the synagogue with green
brings to mind the other aspect
of the Shavuot festival, i.e., that
it was the "festival of the first
fruits" (Numbers 28:26). This
depicts the agricultural nature
of the festival which served as
a means of thanksgiving for the
first fruits.
*
Why is it customary to
spend the whole night of
Shavuot reading selections
from the Torah and Rabbinic
literature?
It is generally claimed that
this is done because the Mid-
rash relates that the Jews were
caught napping on the night of
the revelation and thus we Stay
awake to make up for the em-
barrasing situation when Moses
had to go around waking them
up. Some claim that this is
done because King David was
born and died on this day and
it is told that he would arise
during the night to offer prayer
and Psalms to the Almighty.
Others claim that the night be-
fore the revelation was so ex-
citing that the people could not
sleep due to anxiety of what
was to be expected on the mor-
row. By staying up all night we
emulate their experiences.
