ROME — Two battles between
Jewish young men and members
of the neo-fascist Movimento
Sociale Italiano took place in the
old Jewish quarter in this city
Monday night and early Tuesday
morning, resulting in the hos-
pitalization of some of the neo-
fascists.
The fighting started early in
the evening when two automo-
biles carrying MSI electioneer-
ing groups passed through the
narrow streets of the old Jewish
quarter. Young Jews attacked
the occupants of the cars, beating
them and causing their hospitali-
zation.
A few hours later, near mid-
night, the MSI headquarters lo-
cated near the Jewish quarter
dispatched three more automo-
biles with their followers. The
caravan carried emblems of the
MSI.
The Jewish young men at-
tacked again. This time the fight-
ing was stopped after appeals for
an end to the altercation by the
Rome Chief of Police and by
Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff.
Strong police units guarded
Wednesday all approaches to
the midtown district of the
former Jewish ghetto in
Rome as an aftermath to two
days of violent clashes be-
tween neo-fascists and Jews.
Several Jews were held for
questioning and most of them
were promptly released. Six
persons described as rightists
were hurt and one Jew was ar-
rested on charges of resisting
authorities.

Police planned special pro-
tection for the synagogue until
after the municipal elections
are held Sunday.
- The agitation in the Jewish
section eased Tuesday but the
atmosphere remained tense.
The Jewish community issued
a statement that "violent re-
action" of Jews to any provoca-
tion was "inevitable" after
what the Jews had suffered at
the hands of fascists and nazis.
The statement also lauded the
"tact" shown by police in quell-
ing the battles.
Jewish community leaders
said that the neo-fascist propa-
ganda in the ghetto section was
clearly provocatory. The Jews
said the rightists shouted anti-
Semitic slogans and that a shot
was fired from one of the cam-
paign cars.
Angry Jews attacked and
mauled the campaigners. Later
Monday evening there were
more such clashes. Toward
midnight several hundred Jews,
most of them youngsters,
marched to the party offices of
the Italian social movement
and more scuffles followed.
The area of the clashes is a
lower middle class district
which was once the compulsory
dwelling place of Rome's Jews.
Most of its residents are Jews.
About a third of Rome's 12,000
Jews live in the old ghetto.
