Hebrew Schools to Hold 42nd Annual Meeting

The United Hebrew Schools
will hold its 42nd annual meet-
ing the evening of June 20 at
the Jewish Center.
Mandell L. Berman, president
of the board will present the
annual report.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Rubens
of Birmingham, England, an-
nounce the forthcoming mar-
riage, on Aug. 14, of their
daughter, Stephanie, to Melvin
S. Merzon, son of Mr. and Mrs.
M. Manuel Merzon of Griggs
Ave.
The bride-elect is a graduate
of St. Martin's School of Art in
London, England, having receiv-
ed a National Diploma in De-
sign and at present is employed
as- dressmaking advisor at Rack-
hams in Birmingham, England.
Her fiance was graduated
from Wayne State University
with the degrees of bachelor of
arts and master of education.
He is a member of Kappa Nu
fraternity. He attended Yeshi-
vath Beth Yehudah and the
Theological Seminary Chachmey
Lublin of Detroit. At present
he is teaching English, by ap-
pointment from the British Min-
istry of Education, at King Ed-
ward the Sixth School for Boys,
Aston, Birmingham, as well as
the University scholarship level
classes. He also teaches in the
Hebrew school in Birmingham.
The couple will leave for a
honeymoon to the Scandinavian
countries and Western Europe,
after which they will live in
England for another year be-
fore coming to the U.S.
The parents of the bride-
groom will leave for England
early in August and will fly to
Israel after the wedding for a
visit of several weeks with rel-
atives and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Helman,
formerly of Detroit, will attend
the wedding. Helman, who is
a Vice Consul with the Ameri-
can Embassy in Vienna, will
be the bridegroom's best man.

convention in Atlantic City last
month, will report on the events
related there. M. Teiler and
Jacob Reissman will report on
their findings at the national
W.C. school conference, which
was also held at Atlantic City.

11 p.m., Sunday, June 17, in honor of the Bar Mitzvah of
their son, David, to be solemnied at the Shaarey Zedek on
June 16, and on the occasion of the graduation of their daugh-
ter, Jan Carol, from Mumford High School. No cards.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack L. Stone will honor their son, Dr. Dale
Howard Stone, with a cocktail party at Kingsley Inn on Sunday.
Among the many out of town guests. Robin Herman of Chicago
will be present. Dr. Stone, a graduate of Chicago Osteopathic
Medical School, will be interning at the Detroit Osteopathic
Hospital in Highland Park.
The Bodzin Family - Club will meet Sunday evening at the
home of Mr. and Mrs . Marvin Seligson, 18115 Wisconsin.
The wedding anniversary of Esther and Mike Tarnapol,
charter members of the Mr. and Mrs. Group, City of Hope, was
celebrated May 22 at the organization's annual dinner party at
the Elmwood Casino, Windsor, Ont.
The Morey Charmers will entertain the Eat and Bust Supper
Club Sunday evening at their home, 13410 Rosemary, Oak Park.
Prior to the Oak Park High Prom at the Town and Country
Club, a coke-tail party honoring Donna Lewis upon her gradua-
tion with honors from Oak Park High School, will be given
Tuesday evening at the home of her parents, the H. A. Lewis'
of 24271 Blackstone, Oak Park.
Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Sorkin of Rutherford Ave. will depart
for Chicago to attend the graduation Saturday of their daughter,
Joyce Rosiland, from the University of Chicago.
Alan Jay Goldman, Mumford High School's American Field
Service exchange student, will leave for .Japan to spend the
summer as the adopted son of Dr. and Mrs. Taro Kato of Mizu-
nami, a small village about 200 miles south of Tokyo. Since
school in Japan will be in session until July 20. Alan will attend
classes with his Japanese brother. Alan is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. David A. Goldman of Briarcliff Road.

The Michigan Masters Pair
Tournament was won by Louis
J. Cohen and Richard Balanow
of Chicago.
Eighty-eight midwest experts
competed in the event. The next
best Detroit pair were Mr. and
Mrs. Morris Berman. who finish-
ed fourth. Berman was recently
awarded his Life Master card.
Martin J. Cohn captained a
team that tied for first in the
Team of Four event, and was
second in the Men's Team.
Sylvia Stein captured the
Womens Pair, and Albert J.
Silber was a member of the win-
ning Men's Team. June Honig-
man joined the winners of the
Women's Team.
The limited pairs was led by
Mr. and Mrs. Irving Caplan.
Other local players who finish-
ed second in various events in-
cluded Florence Weill, Audrey
Melander, Lorraine H e i n r i c h,
Walter Goldsmith and Bruce

students to more than 110 stu-
dents, who are registered for
the school's fifth year begin-
ning in September.
In addition to fine class-
rooms, the new quarters will
include an arts-and-crafts and
science room, indoor athletic
facilities, and superbly equipped
kindergarten, library and lunch-
room areas, as well as a spa-
cious playground.

dent, announces that the Hillel
Day School of Metropolitan De-
troit will be housed in the class-
rooms of the Jewish Commun-
ity Center, 15110 Ten Mile
Rd., Oak Park, starting in
September.
The school was founded four
years ago by a group of Detroit
educators, rabbis and leaders of
Conservative synagogues, along
with key figures in the Zionist
Organization of Detroit.

Besides the experienced
licensed grade teachers, the
faculty includes specialized in-
structors in science, music,
speech therapy and physical
education. A competent psy-
chologist serves as consultant
for student tests and measure-
ments.
The general studies program
is fully accredited by the State
of Michigan, and meets t h e
highest standards of the Oak
Park and Detroit Boards of Ed-
