Summer Concerts

THE DETROIT SYMPHONY
ORCHESTRA will open its an-
nual nine-week summer concert
series June 12, in the Michigan
State Fairgrounds Music Shell.
The 27 programs will be pre-
sented free to the public each
Tuesday. Thursday and Satur-
day at 8:15 p.m. through August
11.

the annual meeting on May 16.

In his annual report, Katz
dwelt on the progress made by
the society in the establishment
of archival records of the De-
troit Jewish community and
the compilation of a bibliogra-
phy on Michigan Jewish history.
He advised the members that
state markers will be dedicated
this summer at the Lafayette
Street Cemetery of Temple
Beth El, Michigan's oldest Jew-
ish cemetery, and the site of
the trading post at the re-
stored Fort Michelimackinac
in Mackinaw City of Ezekiel
Solomon, the first Jewish resi-
dent in Michigan.

Bnai Brith Holds
Drive for Blood

Under the joint sponsorship of
the Bnai Brith Men's and Wom-
en's Council of Detroit, the last
Blood Bank Rally of this season
will be held on Monday at the
Pepper School in Oak Park, and
on Tuesday at the Adas Shalom
Synagogue. Time both evenings
will be from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m.
Donors will be eligible for a
drawing for two week-end trips
to Oakton Manor and a five-day
trip for two to Nippersink. In
addition, the Bnai Brith Bowling
association will offer prizes to
Bnai Brith bowlers.

Giovanni Sartori, of the Uni-
versity of Florence, based on
the author's translation from
the Italian of "Democrazia e
definizione."

Corporation. Levinson also is
president of Columbia Invest-
ment Corporation.
President of Metro Accept-
ance, Inc., is John E. Lurie, who
founded the Wrigley Super-
Market chain, served as its presi-
dent and still is a major share-
holder in the huge grocery con-
cern.
Levinson's title in Metro Ac-
ceptance is vice president.
Another Detroiter identified
with the new company is Henry
Cohen, who has been named
secretary-treasurer of Metro Ac-
ceptance. A former president
of Abner A. Wolf, Inc., Detroit-
based wholesale grocery con-

sale grocery distributor.
A key man in the manage-
ment of the new company is
Donald C. Layher, Detroit at-
torney.
Levinson said Layher will be
in charge of all operations of
Metro Acceptance, Inc., and Co-
lumbia Investment Corporation.
Launching of the new com-
pany came at a time when
Franklin Mortgage Corporation,
which started four years ago
with some $19 million in its
mortgage servicing portfolio,
had reached another milestone.

troit for a lecture tonight, at
the Labor Zionist Institute,

outline the status of Yiddish
in Israel and will describe the

the field of Literature.

A northwest area resident has
been named the winner of the
Sophomore Scholarship Award at
Wayne State University's College
