LONDON, (JTA) — Soviet
government leaders, including a
number of ministers, as well as
about 40 leaders of the Jewish
communities in Moscow and
Kiev, came to the Israel Embassy
at Moscow to celebrate Israel's
Independence Day.
Jewish Telegraphic Agency
dispatches from virtually all
other countries reported broad
participation in Israel Indepen-
dence Day receptions held at
Israel's Embassies or conducted
by Zionist and other Jewish
organizations in most capitals.
Among the dispatches were re-
ports of attendance by high gov-
ernmental officials and state and
municipal leaders at Israel Em-
bassy receptions at Helsinki,
4russels, Vienna, Lisbon, Syd-
ney, Johannesburg, Bombay, Mon-
treal, Guatemala City, Rio de
Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Santi-
ago de Chile.
Even West Berlin participated
in the celebration. The Zionist
Organization of the former capital
held an Independence Day rally
at the new Jewish Community
Center there.

Hias Joins Catholics,
Protestants in Urging
Action on Refugee Bill

WASHINGTON,
(JTA) -
- United Hias Service joined
with a Catholic and a Protestant
relief agency in urging the Sen-
ate to take action on a House-
passed bill that would insure

continued United States partici-
pation in broad-scale rescue and
resettlement refugee programs.

In a statement issued at a
news conference jointly held by
United Hias, Catholic Relief

Service and the Church World
Service, heads of the three inter-
national voluntary agencies com-
plained that the measure, the

Migration and Refugee Assistance
Act of 1962, "is still tabled in

book of prayers for the entire
year—for the daily services, the
Sabbath, the Holy Days and all
holidays, has been issued by
Prayer Book Press, 410 Asylum
St., Hartford 1, Conn.
Ably compiled and edited by
Rabbis Sidney Greenberg and
Morris Silverman, this volume
is typographically perfect for
h i l d r e n. United Synagogue
leaders and Conservative rabbis
guided in the preparation of
this volume with their sugges-
tions, and the result is a volume
that is impressive and should
serve an important purpose for
use in religious schools, in
homes and by participants in
junior congregational services.
In an inspiring preface, the
editors and compilers point
out that "to worship God is a
truly great privilege of hu-
man beings," and the Sidur
helps "to pray sincerely and
reverently." They explain the
meaning of "Sidur"—"order"
—indicating that the prayers
are arranged in a certain or-
der; that the Sidur is the most

important book for the Jew
next to the Bible; that it took
centuries to compile it and

that it is correct to say that
it was written by the Jewish
people throughout the gen-

erations.

Many of the explanatory notes
accompanying the prayers will
be found of immense value by
the young people using "Sidur-

eny", our Sidur, and will help

you ngsters-

Every occasion on the Jewish

calendar is represented in "Si-
durenu" — the Torah service,

the candle lighting which is ex-
plained by a "Welcoming the
Sabbath" note, prayers for the
New Moon and Our Country
and Israel, the Kiddush for Sab-
bath and holidays, selected por-
tions for Purim, Passover (the
Mah Nishtana with a festival
evaluation), Rosh Hoshanah and
Yom Kippur, Cantillations and
other musical notes and a score
of other selections.
The editors state in their in-

troductory essay:

"When we are happy, we
want to express our joy.
When we are sad, we want to
find comfort. When we are
tempted to do wrong, we want
strength to resist. When we
or oar loved ones are sick, we
ask for healing. On all such
occasions, the Sidur is our
friend. There is much truth
in the words of the man who
said that 'we pray because we
cannot help praying'. For a

Jew, prayer is the key with
which he opens the day, and
the lock with which he closes
it at night.
"We pray in Hebrew, the
language which we call
Lashon Hakodesh, the "holy
language'. Hebrew is holy to
us because it is the language

in which the Torah and our
other sacred and basic books
were written. It is the Lin-

day it is also the language
spoken by Emar people in Is-
raeL At all times it has united
Jews throughout the world.
What a thrill it would be, if

some day you, too, would un-
derstand and speak Hebrew.

"At this time, however, you
are still learning the lan-
guage. You do not yet know
the meaning of the beautiful
Hebrew mortis. We have,
therefore, provided you with
explanations and comments
which will help you under-
stand the true meaning of the
Sider. God wants not only our
words, but also our thoughts;
not only our lips, but also our
hearts.
"Before you begin to study
the Sidur, it would be well to
consider the care of this book.
We should show respect for
all books and especially for
holy books. Therefore, we
have to be careful as to how
we treat the Sider. Before we
use it, we must make sure
our hands are dean. If we
drop it by accident, we pick it
up and kiss it. We do not
write on the pages of the
Sidur. We do not sit on it.
We do not take it into such
places as a bathroom. When
a Sidur becomes too worn to
be used, we may not discard
it by throwing it into a trash
can, or by burning it. The
Sidur is left at the Syna-
gogue, which saves worn-out
books in a closet or store-

Religious Schools

room. When a large slumber
of such holy books have been
gathered together, the Syna-
gogue arranges to bury the
books is a Jewish cemetery."
The merits of this fine prayer
book become apparent imme-
diately to educators and to par-
ents who desire to enhance the
praying practice of their chil-
dren. It is deserving of all the
commendations accorded it.

Israeli Industries

More than half of the indus-
trial establishments in Israel
are located in Tel Aviv, the na-

tion's largest city. About 15 per-
cent of the manufacturing firms
are in Haifa, the country's

largest port.
