The 1962 baseball season is
very young, but it is already
apparent that one of its bright-
est stars will be Sandy Koufax,
one of the few Jewish major
league ball players in the game.
-Koufax, you will recall, is the
long, lean left - hander who
strikes out his opponents with
ease. A year ago, he attained
authentic stardom with the Los ,
Angeles Dodgers, and this sea-
son he started off impressively.
In winning his third game of
the young season on April 24,
Koufax fanned 18 batters (in a
game against the Chicago Cubs),
matching the modern major
league record, which he had
shared with Bobby F e 11 e r.
Sandy did this job for the sec-
ond time in his career, which is
a separate major league mark.
In the past, Dizzy Dean of
the St. Louis Cardinals and Art
Mahaffey of the Philadelphia
Phillies had struck out 17 in a
game. In 1938, Feller fanned
18 Detroit Tigers. Koufax, on
August 31, 1959, struck out 18
San Francisco Giants.
In the April 24 game, Boufax
(who a year ago set a National
League season mark for strike-
out with 269) completed the con-
test in a blaze of glory. In the
ninth inning, Sandy fanned
three in a row. He also struck
out nine of the first ten men
he faced. He struck out the
side in the first, third and ninth
innings. And this is only the
start of the 1962 season!
