THE DETROIT JE WISH NEWS — Friday, May 11, 1962 — 24 • Leader Gets High Recognition in National Carpet Cleaning Circles Betrothal Announced Alex and Celia Goldberg Honored of Margaret Levin as 'Outstanding Foster Parents' Leader Carpet Cleaning Co.. I Since then, the firm took on Mr. and Mrs. Alex (Celia) Goldberg, representing the Jew- ish Family and Children's Service, were among those to receive honor certificates as "outstanding foster parents" last week from the Committee for Foster Children Program. Outstanding foster parents were selected for the award by each of the 11 child-care agen- cies which are members of the Committee. The presentations were made at a May 3 luncheon at the Veterans Memorial Build- ing. The event was the kick-off of the Committee's Foster Child Week observance May 6-12. The Goldbergs' first contact with the Jewish Family and Children's Service was in 1942, according to Harold Silver, di- rector of the agency and chair- man of the 1962 Committee for Foster Children. .Since 1942, the agency has placed 19 children, from the ages of 17 months to 17 years, with Mr. and Mrs. Goldberg. In the agency record of the Goldbergs, a worker states: "Each time I have seen the Goldbergs I have been more and more impressed with their strength and their real ability to give to children. There is a brightness, a sensitivity to han- dle situations with children and a warmth in these people that is most unusual. ". . . It is not the foster mother alone who stands out in this, for friends and out- siders spoke and still speak of her as not 'Celia Goldberg,' but 'the Goldbergs and the children,' and by 'the children' they included the children of others whom they (the Gold- Mr. and Mrs. Edward M. bergs) sheltered and loved, Schwartz of Farmington an- even though temporarily." nounce the Bas Mitzvah of their daughter, Thea Gale, will be observed at Sabbath morning For the Finest in Music services Saturday at the Livonia Jewish Congregation.
