Near East Subcommittee Requested
to
Summon Stevenson on Israel Issue
WASHINGTON, (JTA)—Dem-

ocratic Congressman Leonard
Farbstein of New York asked
the chairman of the Near East
Subcommittee of the House For-
eign Affairs Committee to invite
United Nations Ambassador Ad-
lai Stevenson "or the official in
the Department of State most
responsible" for U.S. Middle
Eastern foreign policy, to testify
before the House on "the moti-
vations" of the United States-
sponsored resolution in the UN
Security Council, censuring Is-
rael, earlier this month.
Farbstein, a member of the
subcommittee, said in a letter
to subcommittee chairman L. H.
Fountain, North Carolina Demo-
crat, that he was making his
request because he, "along with
other of my colleagues have be-
come increasingly disturbed by
the conduct of our affairs in the
United Nations" with respect
to the Middle East.
The New Yorker said U.S.
votes in the United Nations dur-
ing the past four months appear
"on the face" to be "in harmony
with the views of Israel's sworn
enemies."
In addition to U.S. sponsor-
ship of the censure resolution,
the congressman cited the
American UN delegation's ef-
forts in the General Assembly,
last December, to defeat a

16-nation proposal for direct
Israel-Arab peace talks which,
he said, "caused widespread
concern in Congress."
Farbstein pointed out that the
U.S. vote was cast against the
resolution "despite repeated pro-
nouncements by our State De-
partment, reaffirming our sup-
port for direct talks among par-
ties to - all disputes." Similarly,
he said, U.S. sponsorship of the
censure resolution "again failed
to go to the root of the diffi-
culties—the refusal of the Arabs
to negotiate and make peace
with Israel."
"One wonders if these two re-
cent developments are not part
of a pattern, suggesting an
emerging new policy in the Mid-
dle East," Farbstein stated in
his letter. "If such a new policy
has been adopted, it cannot serve
the cause of peace in the Mid-
dle East."
The New Yorker also stated
that his request for the appear-
ance of Stevenson, or a State
Department official, before the
Near East Subcommittee was in
keeping with Congress' "right
and obligation to know how the
foreign affairs of this Nation are
carried out."
The request comes some two
weeks after Far),..in's intro-
duction of a resolikon in the
House, calling on the State

tion for contributions to the field
of nuclear science.
They are Dr. Herbert Gold-

who was cited for significant con-
tributions to reactor physics and
to nuclear cross sections; and Dr.

Meanwhile, Rep. Laurence
Curtis, a member of the House
of Representatives Committee on
Foreign Affairs, urged that the
Government "take vigorous steps
to protect American citizens
against discrimination" by for-
eign governments.
He referred to bias practiced
against American Jews by Arab
states in general and, specifi-
cally, by Saudi Arabia, pointing
out that "a' certain country" is
not permitting the entry of "per-
sons of a certain minority
group."
"There is ample evidence"
in the hands of the Govern-
ment, the congressman
charged, showing such discrim-
ination. He alleged that even
an American plane carrying a
congressional delegation might
not be permitted to land "in
one Arab country until assur-
ance had been given that no
person of a certain minority
group would be included in the
visiting party.
Curtis, a Republican, is a
candidate for the United States
Senate, seeking election to the
Senate seat formerly held by
President Kennedy.

PARIS, (JTA)—Following a
two-day meeting here of the Eu-

Confederation of General Zion-
ists, the group headed by Dr.
Emanuel Neumann, a decision
was announced to ask for the
convocation of a joint confer-
ence of the World Confedera-
tion of General Zionists, the
group headed by Dr. Emanuel
Neumann, a decision was an-
nounced to ask for the convoca-
tion of a joint conference of
the World Confederation, the
Liberal Party in Israel and "all
General Zionists who are in fa-
vor of unification in the Gen-
eral Zionist movement" for the
purpose of designating a world
leadership solely authorized to
speak on behalf of the General
Zionist movement in Israel and
in the countries outside of Israel.
The Liberal Party in Israel is
a merger, effected a year ago,
between the former General
Zionist and Progressive Parties
of Israel. "One year after the
fusion of the two groups in Is-
rael, the existence of two Con-
federations of General Zionists
prejudices the General Zionist
movement and Zionism in gen-
eral," the conference here em-
phasized.
The decision adopted by the
conference said that unification
of the two competing Confedera-
tions "means neither identifica-
tion with any Israel party, nor

interference in the internal af-
fairs of Israel and of the Knes-
set. It is based solely on the
problems in connection with the
World Zionist Congress, on the
Zionist activities, and on a com-
mon approach to Zionist prob-
lems."

To the Detroit Jewish Community

In the vibrant communal life of Jews in Detroit, there are many
occasions when distinguished leadership manifests itself and is recognized
as such. Honor is bestowed upon men who have proven worthy in
various areas.

The . work of the Rabbinate, particularly in a large community, is
perhaps more intricate and complex than the demands imposed on
any other calling. The multiple currents running through our communal
structure require an unusual degree of unselfishness, devotion,
wisdom, and courage of conviction.

We have felt for many years that these qualities are exemplified -
by a distinguished rabbinic personality living in our midst, Rabbi Leizer
Levin, spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Tefilo Emanuel Tikvah,
and Chairman of the Board of Education of the Beth Yehudah Schools. As
a leading fOrce in the Council of Orthodox Rabbis, Rabbi Levin has
had a major share in many decisions affecting the community as a
whole. He has acquired a host of friends in all circles.

It is with this in mind that the Synagogue Council of the Beth
Yehudah Schools will pay tribute to Rabbi Levin by a dinner in his
honor on Tuesday evening, May 15, at Sharrey Shomayim Synagogue,
14200 W. Ten Mile Road, Oak Park. As befits Rabbi Levin's deep
concern and long association with Jewish education in our community,_
all proceeds will go to the scholarship fund of the Beth Yehudah
Schools. They will help make it possible to give the benefits of a
Yeshivah education to youngsters that desire it and need scholarship aid.

We know that the entire community will want to join in
this undertaking. Obviously it is impossible to extend a personal invitation
to everyone. But to all who share our feelings about the distinguished
guest of honor, and about the importance of Jewish education, we
say: please consider this YOUR invitation to attend this dinner. For your
reservations please call immediately WE 1-0203 or DI 1 7300.
