Jewish Leaders Give Facts to
Kennedy on Discriminations
WASHINGTON, (JTA)— President John F. Kennedy con-
ferred Monday for more than a half-hour with a delegation of
American Jewish Committee leaders on a number of important
current issues. Chief among the problems was the concerted
Arab Lague discrimination against American citizens and the
general invasion of American rights by Arab League countries.
The delegation, headed by Governor Herbert H. Lehman, honorary
vice-president of the American Jewish Committee, included: Jacob
Blaustein and Irving M. Engel, honorary presidents; Louis Caplan,
president; and John Slawson, executive vice-president.
Lehman, who served as spokesman for the group, said that the
Jewish leaders had not asked for or received any promises of action
on proposals made. He described the President as "understanding."
He declined to elaborate in any way on the conversations.
Conducted under challenges of great overseas crises coupled with
demands for increased support of local agencies, made under adverse
economic conditions, Detroit's 1962 Allied Jewish Campaign officially came
to a close Wednesday night with an assured increase of at least $250,000
over last year's contributions and considerable hope that a minimum of
$5,000,000 will yet be attained from the large number of potential givers
who are yet to be reached. In the meantime, the $4,870,000 assured for
this year's drive—an increase of $250,000 over the previous year—makes
1962 one of the five top campaign years in amounts raised for the United
Jewish Appeal — for the settlement of tens of thousands of oppressed and
declassed Jews who are on the march out of lands of oppression into
Israel — and for 50 other local, national and overseas causes.
Wednesday's closing campaign dinner meeting was utilized by the co-
workers of Campaign Chairman Paul Zuckerman to honor him for his
untiring leadership in a challenging campaign.
The principal address of the evening was delivered by Irving Kane,
of Cleveland, president of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare

A Salute to Israel on
State's 14th Birthday
The accompanying photo shows Israel's
Statue of Liberty—the gift to Israel of the
British House of Commons. It is now the. offi-
cial Israel Exhibition emblem, designed by
Abram Games, well known Jewish artist, based
on the quotation from Amos 9:15, "And I will
plant them on their own soil and they shall
not be uprooted anymore from out of their
land," taken from the Haftarah—the selection
from the Prophets—read on the Sabbath fol-
lowing Israel's Independence Day. Planting is
represented by the young stem. The sturdy
hand holding the Menorah suggests security
and guardianship against uprooting; the vig-
orous leaf motifs in the Menorah symbolize
the creative accomplishments of the State of
Israel, whilst the leaf-shaped "Yood" at the top
is the triumphant symbol of the results of the
years of efforts and growth of the Jewish State.
The prescribed color-scheme is light brown at
the base, shading into light green at the top,
with the emblem outline itself in dark green,
suggestive of freshness and youth.
